The pipes are played in parts of England as well.
    Northumbrian Small Pipes

    Cornish Pipes

    Welsh Pipes

    Border Pipes

So it's not just Scotland, you also have the Irish, Breton, Spanish etc, etc

  2. I actually quite like bagpipes.. ;)

I hope that for this referendum the Scottish people ignore the rhetoric and actually think about the decision they are about to make. Examine the facts they have regarding the economy and ask themselves questions about it to confirm they have the right answers. They may well become a rich country for a few years, but what happens when the oil runs out? What happens when they cease to be able to take advantage of British trade deals? What happens when you really have to pay for yourselves?
If the answers and the figures are positive and you still want to remove yourselves from the Union then I wish you well. I will see you as foreign neighbours in a similar way to the Irish.
I personally don't believe this should be a matter of "national pride", Scotland already has that. In the end it is all about sustainability IMHO.
    Good luck Scotland!

This is so true. I have spoken to a few people up there on my travels and they are asking this same question. They know full well they get more from the union overall, but the flag waving jingoists seem to have the louder voice. Makes me wonder at times what they will gain from leading good people into a bad decision.

I heard something that made me think on the radio last night and it was about tax generated per capita, and it really didn't equate, even taking into account the oil revenue, basically the average person gets more from the pot overall than they pay in. And that was from an exiled yes voter who was campaigning for a yes vote. he was working on the basis that they would redress the difference when they get power. Too late then me thinks. pensions gone, welfare and health gone. Never mind the infrastructure that Europe pays a lot towards atm ( which they won't get into without a currency) Hopefully the women will save them. As they report the woman have been mainly quiet on the subject!

  5. They can't even do that right, we had it on the local new yesterday that a small company in minehead Somerset is only one off a few in the world that still makes the bagpipes by hand and its all done in house. Then sold to the scots and beyond.

  6. will we still be able to get our oats

  7. I am hoping for a yes vote then a vote for devolution for Yorkshire.

Hopefully that would get the "national" media to look beyond the M25 occasionally

Scottish oil? the entire media debate would be a busted flush ,hell, they may actually have to have spoke about matters of some relevance!

The real truth is more likely something like this.

The oil will run out in a few years. The snides at Westminster have already bagged 7 of your more productive oilfields by making a straight line angled up a bit, which will become theirs once the vote goes yes ( Edit, the Scots will of course get this back, because it is wrong, but probably after 20 years of legal wrangling!) The big pension payout comes in about 10 years time. The Scots and Scotland can finance their own pensions, schooling, health etc. takes the burden off Westminster. There are 59 million people in England, it is where most of the unions wealth is generated, why share it with a country that they don't see as fiscally buoyant in 20 years time. There simply isn't a big enough population in Scotland to generate the wealth needed to run a country that size. 5 million people- How much tax income will that generate when the major employers move out?

The fall back for the snides at Westminster is. Scotland can join Europe and it will be okay ( after they have had fun making the Scots jump through hoops to get a currency based on the pound, so as they can actually rejoin Europe ). In the meantime, the lack of opposition votes will make them safer in their seats. ffs - Vote Yes. I will be up there buying more houses for a pittance and renting them back to you!

Are the oil fields drilled by a nationalised entity such as the NCB?

BP. I think. with American money backing. BP. Conoco. and a load more operate out of the North and southern North sea, . Bp is British owned, but it's the revenue each barrel generates that the snides are after!

Whoever owes it or them means jot to the man in the street, they just rip us all off anyway, they pay themselves massive money and hide profits in off shore accounts, big business is rotten like the banks

They'll drill the oil as long as its economic, not runs out....if they find a bigger source elsewhere that can be extracted cheaper, the production will drop.

Alternatively, if they can't, and we don't change the way we use it, the revenues increase.

    Big gamble.
