Was wondering where we stand on Danbury's?

Not having a pop at anyone, each of us has got our own opinion which is just and right, but would we welcome Danbury ( the modern bay type ones) owners on here?

I'm only asking as to me they are the nearest thing to late bays out of the VW commercial range, spiritual cousins as it were.

So welcome here, or should shoot off to the late late bay.com ( incidentally, there might be a forum they have anyway, in which case excuse my ramblings)?

  2. Of course there welcome ,we use to have a scottish danbury owner but he *******ed a few people off I think.

  3. I have a Danbury but it is a 1972 crossover. But still a danbury

  4. Theres no doubt they are a bay and none that they are late. How many parts are on our buses that came out of the same factory. I wouldnt pay big money for one but have driven one (air cooled albeit) and it felt just the same although with much newness!

  9. Isn't that the late late late late bay? I've got no issues as I guess some parts will end up in my resto!

i'll welcome anyone or anything, even scooby conversions, but yep there is a site for brazillian bays, anyway they're closer to mine than them early ones we have on here that pretend to be crossers

  11. they have the same rust issues and reliability problems as us

I've just had a look around at the Brazilian Bay scene as it were:

They do have their own forum - have to say most of it is pretty run of the mill stuff.

Couple of corkers about old bays - so it seems that both sides of the proverbial fence have strong opinions:

    This article is interesting:

    http://www.vwcampervanblog.com/is-it-possible-to-own-a-hassle-free-vw-camper-van/

Seems that some Danbury owners are as myopic as us (the admin on the forum with the Red Van seems compelled to present any argument he can to slate older vans but hey ho, agenda etc etc!!!!)

Some of the postings here and there made me think about my attitude towards modern bays - I like them, I think they are good for the scene - I also think that there will be a demarcation line as with anything people are fanatical about.

Would I buy one - no - but then there is only one bay I would have bought anyway - I'd keep mine and if I had room and the wonga, I'd buy a split or a notch back as I think they are very desirable.

  14. I'd have thought friendly people were welcome regardless of what vehicle they choose. I still wave at them.

  15. Zoe and I hired a brazillian for a few days this time last year - it was pretty good, you still got waved at, still got smiled at, the brakes were still dodgy and the steering had lots of play.

They are just later bays, that's all

To my knowledge, we have only a couple Brazilian late late late late bays here in OZ.
I'd still be happy to welcome any owner with one, maybe they'll end up seeing the errors of their ways & move onto a "proper" Kombi ^-^

be it brazillian, early, or left hand drive someone somewhere is never happy, there's always someone who won't like someone elses van, it just depends if you are polite enough to keep your mouth shut, i don't like extreme lowered or modded vans but i don't slate anyones, i'm telling you fact i would have a brazillian tomorrow and would be happy enough wirh it i'm sure, it wouldn't make me a different bloke, also the rust issue? how many of you are old enough to remember latebays new? i bet you there were plenty of 5 year old rusty ones in the 70's while it's true there are a lot of rusty brazillians, there are plenty of good ones too, it's no wonder other marques think lates or earlies or splits are rivals when there's all the bitching, jeez you'll be telling me brown isn't cool next.

  19. More than welcome in my opinion

One thing that jumps out at me is that these people love their vans, and seem to hang on to them for a good while too.

So there is common ground which is a relief!

Regarding rust issues, yep, they rusted in the 70's - I was sent underneath mine as an 8 year old with a brush and can of waxoyl - so I can attest they did rust, or were in the least not that well rust proofed. British roads and salt play havoc with anything steel, no matter what year and when!
