When it comes to outdoor cooking I’m very set in my ways - it has to be done over charcoal, Cooking outside with gas is pointless and cheating ..

but... against my better judgement I’ve started to look at buying a gas barbecue for use when camping - it’s going to far more practical and with more and more campsites not allowing traditional barbecues .. has to be the way forward ..

so, I’m after recommendations if you don’t mind - looking for something that will cater for three of us so no need for anything massive , ideally packs away to minimal size and something I can plug into my underslung gas tank - what do you have ??

  2. I agree, campsite “barbecue “ ok to be gas cos that’s what most of us have or will have in our vans but at home, in the garden must be over charcoal!!

  3. Are you looking at using lava rock daz ? I use a safari chef just gas and it packs away small into a case . It has different plates so bar gridle flat plate and open gas so you can boil or cook beans or what ever . Easy to clean and economical to run , the best bit about gas is you can turn it down or up to suit . You still get the chard taste too from the cooking . About £80 on the small one or you can get a bigger one . I have cooked pizza stir fry’s bread roast dinner the lot on mine  . There are loads out there , I’ve had couple of others but this one is more versatile and site friendly .

  5. Cadac Safari chef for the win

I was very much a charcoal BBQer and still am to a certain extent but for a quick grill up it`s a no brainer , the bonus being you can also use the gas ring to cook , boil a kettle etc etc ..

The downside is they can be a pig to clean properly and even with a windbreak the wind can blow the ring out and you won`t know . Probably great inside an awning but unless there`s a few of us meeting up i never erect said wendy house ...

All in all though it`s worth having and mine gets used quite a lot but great to have a proper charcoal job every now and again ..

  6. Cadac safari chef.

    Packs down small.

Can connect to your outside gas tank, with quick release adaptor.

Loads of pans, surfaces to cook on so you can do loads of dishes.

You can cook pizzas on it.

You could do a stir fry.

You can fill a bit of it with water and then it catches meat fat, making it easier to clean. Unless you are @Lasty who always forgets.

  8. @Dazza you can bung some gas bbq 'woodchips' on them to make them taste more like proper bbq

My mate has just got some so ill find out exactly what these 'woodchips' are

Gone up a bit since I bought mine but I think you can still get a bit cheaper but try and get one with both grilles ,you can fit bayonet to pipe to fit your gas canister . The hold-all is good and everything has its own zip upsleeve .

Got a safari chef, but cleaning is a pain...started using a George Forman grill...doesn't make for a "social event ", like traditional bbq, but cooks stuff in no time, wipes down with kitchen roll and pops in a carrier bag in a cupboard to store.
