We're looking into buying a VW camper (first time), and have come across a lot of imports in our search. Is it easy to convert a LHD to a RHD? Is it expensive? Does doing this detract from the value? Anything to be concerned about in doing this? Thanks for the help.
its fairly time consuming, price wise i would think 1-2grand and i cant see it detracting from the value, perhaps adding to it
i wouldn't there are still lots of RHD van about and if you don't want a rusty UK van import from south Africa or Australia
I wouldn't convert one unless it was a twin slider, because a normal LHD bus will always have the sliding door on the wrong side.
like the others have said, its quite a bit of work but not impossible I think Rixy converted his, check out his resto thread:- http://thelatebay.com/index.php?topic=1828.msg22768#msg22768
Mines been converted apparently, but I love my sliding door on my side, much easier than running around the van
when driving something the size of a bay it makes no real difference if its lhd, it is nicer to get in and out of them with out having to be out in the middle of the road,
Why d ya wanna covert to RHD, LHD's are a doddle to drive, both of ours are left hookers & tbh I'd keep them that way. If I bought another bus, I'd probably got lhd again
Some people will get on with LHD, some wont. Its just about driving style and everyones is different. In terms of converting from LHD to RHD I wouldnt bother. I'd buy RHD from the offset if thats what I wanted. I cant see it not de-valuing the bus to be honest.
Have you tried driving a LHD van yet ? I would agree that having the sliding door on the 'wrong' side is inconvenient but I do not find the LHD an issue really. Entering from a slip road and overtaking is probably the worst bits I have found but the bus drives so slowly anyhow, that when you are entering from a slip road you should have plenty of time to check the mirrors, look over your shoulder, ask your passengers to check, check the mirrors again, and again etc Overtaking....well at 55mph, I am not going to be overtaking much I suggest you try and find some LHD vans to drive first and see if you can cope quite quickly. If not, then wait for a good RHD. If you go the conversion route, then I think Davidoft was not far away from the £2k mark which is what I saw when I first started looking. The important thing is to make sure the conversion is done well I reckon to avoid detracting from value. From what I saw, good RHD vans will be a bit more expensive than their equivalent LHD so although you may spend out now, you may get it back in the future ? Also depends on what you can afford now. Everyone on here told me to go for a good sound van first and foremost that required none or little bodywork as it is the bodywork that is the most expensive part of any restoration/ownership. LHD is entertaining though if you glance at your passenger who will be trying to steer and brake without any controls in front of them >
WHS^^^^^ My Mazda3 is exactly the same length and width. That's why they are so easy to park in a car park. Mine's a lefty too. You just need a bit of practice and it's no problem.
if its not broke dont fix it , lhd is no different , only thing is the gesr stick is now on the other hand taking over is a big problem but in a bay who want to take over , lol owen nw
Our first bay was RHD so we ummed and ahhed a bit about getting a lefty as our second (Not showing off by the way, we don't have 2 bays, the first is long gone RIP.... ) . Hasn't been a problem at all, wished we'd got one first time around. They're not for everyone I guess but we wouldn't change it to RHD.
I've got a lefty too and have had no problems in fact it's probably better as I'm right handed and so when searching for a gear it's probably easier ;D
