I went to uni as a mature student in the mid 90s I remember my grant was about £500 a term. I survived by letting out rooms in my house and working as much as I could. Pleased to have finished before tuition fees came in.
My first ahem proper GF went off to Sussex Uni chosen because of it's history as a hot-bed of radicalism and being not to far from London for drug fuelled weekends on a bender. I expect times have changed.
The student union shop there is a little cheaper than the campus mini supermarket, which isn’t cheap! Sussex has a massive Chinese student presence so I don’t know what’s going to happen to it, I guess depends on whether they return or not. Currently it’s a lot harder to get into China from the UK than it is to enter UK from China. I have a British friend who teaches in a Beijing Uni and he has to get a hugely expensive flight and arrange and pay for 3 tests at £400 quid each and isolate over there for two weeks in a hotel he has to pay for and not leave his room. Oh and I forgot to mention their own ‘somewhat intrusive’ and interactive tracing app and systems. And face recognition everywhere. Coming from China to Britain I imagine is a breeze by comparison. @rustbucket you could edit this thread to add a poll to see who's downloaded and who's not? - yes i've downloaded it - no i've not downloaded it but i will do at some point when i can get around to it (lazy/busy) - don't have a suitable mobile phone - no i've not dowloaded 'cos i don't trust the governemnt/ apple / bill gates where's my tin foil hat don't get me started on those aeroplane con trails!
My son finished last summer after four years there - that Coop is dearer than Harrods. Shame if she quits rather than defers, although the standard of teaching is poor and they cater more for the higher paying overseas students, my son had 80% Chinese students on his course, who generally didn't mix outside their circles and spent lecture time messaging each other on one of the many Apple devices they all had.
I thought so, no degree but you put down people who want to do one. and find themselves in a bad situation. Fine.
Boooooo! There should be a degree in humour in everything. See what I did there.. It would have swung around again
Fairy snuff. That said, I’m sure the BEEB schedulers ( or whichever network that was on) wouldn’t broadcast that now for fear of offending someone, anyone
