Concrete float foundations, how thick?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Zebedee, Jun 23, 2012.

  1. Looking at laying a concrete float to get rid of the gravel my camper sits on, and if i can find a cheap sectional garage at a later date i'll add that.

Is a 6" thick concrete float foundation thick enough for a sectional garage base?

I've specced hundreds of raft foundations for single storey buildings/cabins etc.
4" compacted grade 1 hardcore, 4" concrete, reinforcement mesh with min 50mm cover all round, above and below ie stamp in into the concrete after it's poured and approx level before you tamp it.

  4. i'd go 2ft 6'' on the edges incase you want to make it a double storage..

when i wanted to convert my garage into a room at one of my houses they only used 4 inches on the front. so i had to did 2,6inches out and in and have it filled. for building reg, was hard going by hand.. still i was chuffed when i got it passed off. the only thing i did not do was the plastering..

  5. Cheers. Just looked up the price of readymix and its over £100 a m3. So £300-400 for just the concrete.

  6. Try accumix and haggle in the price, most of them will bend on price

  7. Nearest Accumix depot is 4 hours away. Readymix is cheapest i've found in the area and its £92 +VAT/m3. :(
Maybe i'll just lay some slabs instead and buy a 3mx6m gazebo.

Try pricing the hardcore then - that cost a bundle too as I remember.

  11. So would it work out cheaper to mix the concrete myself?
I can borrow a mixer off a neighbour for the price of a bottle of whiskey, though its a lot of work to do.
I spent a few days doing a huge path for my inlaws a while ago and it nearly killed me. I am so out of shape (though is suppose round is a shape). ;D

No idea how to work out quantities for mixing concrete.
For 3m3 of concrete how much sand/stone/cement would i need?

I know where theres a few hundred tons of hardcore that i could use. ;)

  12. I shovel cement 5 shovels sand/gravel....for 3m3 of concrete you will need the same in sand/gravel.. ;)

  13. Ahh. :)
All in Ballast (sand/stone mix) is about £38/m3 and cement is about £4 a bag (maybe 25 bags?). A shade over £200 in total.
Does work out a bit cheaper.

  15. Zed is bang on the money, 4" hardcore packed down the. 4-6" concrete although I would argue one layer of mesh is enough (8mm). Round the edges I would pack the hardcore down to 6" to support any structure you plan on building at a later date.

Concrete mixed at 4-1 (4 ballast to 1 cement)

  16. Still thinking of building a raft foundation. The ground under my camper is so waterlogged now my axle stands sunk 4" into it. That can't be doing the underside of the vehicle much good really can it? :(

Been talking to a mate who is a builder and he can get sand/gravel mix for £13 a ton and we can get hardcore for nowt aslong as we take it away.
25KG of cement is £3.63 each. So £90ish for 25 bags.
Damp proof membrane is about £30.
Blinding sand is a tenner a ton.
Haven't managed to find a local source for reinforment mesh yet but total price of around the £200 mark.

dont forget your builder mate might be talking less vat and aggregate tax

  18. The price for the sand/gravel is mates rates. ;)

    cool
you can buy the steel reinforcement for really cheap at a builders merchant, the stuff thats about 1ft square rebar grid

  20. A193 mesh is about £40 for a 4800 x 2400 sheet.
    I'm looking at a 5600 x 2800 slab so i assume i'd need 2 sheets?
