They were the ones that were working. Those cylinders were doing all the work and subsequently overheated and lost compression, see above.
so lets see the followers on the opposite cylinder , theres 4 cam lobes to open 8 valves, so we should see the same damage to the opposing followers
Not until you strip the entire engine. Did you chop up the oil filter and see if it's caught...the remains of your cam lobe? Seriously, the cam is right in the middle, it will have spread steel paste throughout the engine. Maybe the filter caught most but you can't know that so you'll have to clean everything including the oilways...Deefer will confirm he's just been doing all this. Don't buy ANY engine parts, Really. Don't. Until you have fully assessed you might later decide the best thing would be trade it in for a rebuilt one, or you might decide that as you're going to all this trouble, need new barrels and pistons and a new cam it would be fun and no more effort and cost to make it bigger and more powerful.
At 40 years old that cams Knackered It will have been knackered when he had a new set of followers put in
One lobe always goes first, one piston burns up first, the first dry rod goes through the case. Then the engine stops before the rest goes the same way. Wear and tear exacerbated by the new unworn follower?
In fact, every time i do a rebuild on a type 4 the cam needs changing because is KNACKERED. The pic of the follower faces says it all .
Maybe, but my 2.4 has a 40 year old cam and 40 year old refaced followers. The cam shows the typical wear PATTERN but is in fact not WORN to any detectable degree No probs so far - 15,000 miles. The majority may be worn out, but they aren't all. The engine the cam came from had been in various peoples sheds for at least 20 of the 40 years as a just in case spare that was never needed. Nothing in the engine was out of tolerance.
Your engine isn't this engine. Always use oil with a good amount of zinc. The only option here as you said was to use this engine as an exchange unit for an off the shelf recon. That top follower in the pic is real bad. He's not gunna get another set of followers for 120 quid and have another go at it is he. Yep all the followers are KNACKERED If the followers are KNACKERED The cams KNACKERED
So I dont have enough money for a new engine, but what I do have is loads of time. If the lobe has turned into a metal paste is it a total write off?
