Clutch Cable Issues, New Clutch and release bearing

  1. Just got the engine back In today after replacing clutch. Not fired the engine but adjusted up the cable, the wing nut has tightened all the way down the threads on the cable, this doesnt seem right to me, any ideas?

I am not sure if the conduit is quite right, either I pit it in the wrong way but it looks like it has pulled through the top bracket mount by an inch, this was new last year but I am thinking about a replacement, the bracket is fine and the clutch pedal seems to be ok, question is what else can it be? I am sure that I replaced the clutch correctly, cant really see how I would cock it up, any ideas would be welcome, don't want to drop the engine again...

You can't cock up the clutch it only fits one way. :)
I do see a few buses with a pile of washers under the wingnut as spacers. Never caused this problem myself though, maybe there are LHD and RHD cables that differ in length slightly LHD would be shorter.

A quick look and yes there are many different cables. I guess you have the wrong one. Time to hunt for an inch thick pile of washers...

  3. Thanks for the comment Zed, I was thinking there is only one way it goes, so it looks like a cable issue? I take it a new clutch should mean that the wingnut is not fully wound in (ie all the way down the threads), I will get a new conduit and cable and try that, cheers again...

The conduit should be ok I would think. Pretty sturdy.
Seriously, try first with a pile of washers. If it works you know that's the problem. then you can see how long it should be, measure yours, do the calculation and order the right one. The wing nut should end up about 1/2 way along the thread as I'm sure you've worked out!

  5. I had to add a stack of washers to mine even though i ordered the correct length cable

  6. Looks like that's it then, will try later, never needed them before though....

  7. Just pondering this issue a bit further since I have not had a chance to investigate this issue this weekend due to sub zero temperatures. Before we had clutch issues but seemed to have cured this with a new clutch and conduit last year, in September, couldn't get any gears so assumed that the clutch was gone, had the engine out for rear end welding so got the engine back in with new clutch, rebuilt clutch lever etc. Before, the wingnut was about half way up the threads now to get the pedal free play, the wing nut is all the way up the threads. Once this weather gets better, I am going to put a stack of washers in there to see if that sorts the issue but I am struggling to understand this at the moment, with all things being the same, would a new clutch mean that the cable would need more slack take up or less? Answers on a postcard please!

PS engine not fired up yet...

  8. I've had issues in the past with the adjustment/wing nut position and put it down to the conduit.
Below is a picture of two conduits.
The lower one is a genuine NOS VW one (211 721 361 A)
The upper one is an aftermarket GEMO one (434 130) as sold by the usual suspects.
Although the overall lengths are the same note the difference in length of the white plastic end with flange that goes into the bracket.
When I tried to fit the Gemo one I had issues. When I used a NOS one I had no problems. Another example as far as I'm concerned of " you can't beat NOS". The NOS one pictured cost me £15 but well worth the extra cf. the Gemo one.

    fritt and paradox like this.
  9. Yeah, I've found that ^^ before!!

Normal trick it to add a piece of steel tube that fits over the top to act as a spacer!!

  10. Cheers guys, I am feeling a bit better now, I have just got (a 2nd) new conduit from Vee Wee, its a GEMO but part 432 560, just out of interest, anyone know what the difference in length is?

  11. looking at the pic it's 25-30mm

I had this issue it turned out to be a stretched cable, I used a load of washers it worked for a day or so then the cable snapped
