Been doing some research and I found a product at the german supply company dot com (canadian) advertised as a '67 - 79 Bus adapter ring to allow you to fit a 80mm VDO rev counter in the blanked off (clock)' recess'. It's $CAD 16.00. part number 333 051 RING. Question is - has anyone come across this been available inthe UK from one of the VW parts suppliers? This sounds like a brilliant way to use the spare dash hole without butchering the mounting pod.
It's the famous Bus Boys Ring . VW Heritage used to sell them. Neat, but pricey. You can see it in the pic below of my instruments, together with the VDO tach. If you use the VDO, you'll need to have a small diode in series with the line from the ignition coil, or they jump all over the place.
.... it is the Bus Boys mounting ring. VWH does them I've just found out - part no V09101 at £12.95 (ouch). Sadly none in stock at the moment.
