What goes in the hole?! A clock or something? And what on earth is this thing? I traced the leckie wire up and it seems, possibly, to go into the EGR lamp hole, I may be wrong, my wires are all over the place...
A clock goes in the hole on delux models, and that little box thingy if im not mistaken is an 'egr box' its there to turn on a light to let you know when to have your emmisions tested if you lived in the california Bit more on it here: http://www.ratwell.com/technical/EGRBox.html
What hole ? The odd thing is a gearbox/switch arrangement that turns the egr light (I think) on after a certain milage, indicating you should replace whatever it was that needed replacement. Not important - you can replace the whole lot with a standard length speedo cable if you want. PS Major beat me too it...
A clock goes in the hole. A good one (the proper Delux VW one) will set you back around £125. Don't be ripped off by some folk asking double that. Oh, and if you do get one, as I did, I hope you're able to sleep with a load ticking noise. The tick's pretty loud for such a small thing.

I'm not sure if mine was ever deluxe, it certainly had the trim on the windows but that could've been added after... So one clock to get ordered, that hole is nasty to look at, the missus sleeps with earplugs anyway so she'll be fine, maybe... Bye bye EGR box then, more wires I can remove!
... a clock as everyone else has said. Quite fancy putting a rev counter inthere tho' ... does anyone know of one that wil fit straight in? Its a 75mm diameter gap.
I still have my EGR box in. I'm waiting for the light to come on. It's stupid really because it doesn't recognise that you don't have it in anymore. That said what's more stupid is the CAT warning light on the warning lights that's not wired up. VW never did wire them in. Very strange.
yeah i have a cat light too which is not wired, i'm thinking of connecting it to the wifes pants.....,,
