white spirit/turps. Don't use any other household cleaner or soaps as they are full of salts, if you do you'll watch your frames rot faster than a whores crotch
I'm sure there's more salt in the sea air than in a bit of soap, use car wash in a bucket diluted as if you were washing the car
And when the above fail you may need something more agressive like Evostick adhesive cleaner. I'd start with panel wipe though.
^this. Evostik remover may do the trick. Your 1970s VW paint is more robust than you think, and holds out well against various solvents.
