2.0L auto with standard Solex carb(s). She starts ok, but the revs fail to rise, so I have to sit with foot lightly on throttle to "warm" up. Checked the operation of choke, strangler flaps close when throttle pressed before starting and electric choke mechanism gradually opens them as engine warms up. What am I missing / what isn't happening that should? Had this issue for ages and it's beginning to be a proper irritation.
Not been to van yet, but this is a picture I found on my phone of offside carb. Sent from my SM-J330FN using Tapatalk
On your last photo, you can just see the fast idle rod through the spring and the top of the top adjusting nut! The bottom hooks into the throttle linkage and the top through a lever. There are tiny nuts on the rod each side of the lever for fast idle adkustment. Because of the nature of it, adjusting one will hold both throttled open but you should try to adjust each carb equally. As the coils will also operate slightly differently that will also effect how long it sits at higher revs.
So it these little beasties that need adjusting ( both sides ?) I presume shortening the rod will increase the idle speed. Does this just adjust the idle when choke is on or all the time? Sent from my SM-J330FN using Tapatalk
Go to about 6 min 30 sec on the Sarran1955 video and it's all explained how to set the fast idle up. The main thing is getting a 0.6 mm gap on the main butterfly with the mechanism set on the fast idle cam. Best done with the carbs on the bench I think.
Looks like someone cleaned up the carbs nicely and put that one maximum slow adjustment. Stock setting is set much longer or higher. As you lengthen the arm here by adjusting the 2 nuts you will notice the idle screw come away from it's stop.
The carbs were refurbished and then fitted by my VW specialist in May 2014, not touched by me since. Said the choke hadn't worked right for a while !
These two pics show one how far off the idle throttle stop the adjustment should be when the choke is fully closed. The second is the standard position the fast idle adjustment is. Normally these have some form of paint on the nuts from the factory so they knew if the fast idle had been messed with. I would adjust your fast idle to this position and work from there.
So, type 4 gurus...what sets the fast idle when the choke's operating? Is there a stepped cam somewhere?
I would also do as Patrick suggests, set them like his photo and take it from there. They've been backed off sor far they aren't doing anything. I think there are 3 steps, the biggest one will make it almost red line! We don't want to use that one. The middle one is also quite savage, you wouldn't need to be on that step for long, maybe 30 seconds to a minute, perhap not at all.
Thanks for all the input. The carbs were reconditioned by CarbCare and fitted to my replacement engine back in 2014 by my Sheffield VW specialist. I always said that the choke wasn't working properly but he said it was. I decided to look myself and at first glance the choke set and the electric elements brought it off ... it was only when I noticed no increase in revs, I knew something wasn't right. Another thing that the "specialist " hasn't spotted.... and he's well respected...perhaps I'm just unlucky.
Yes that’s right. Some carbs have the steps out in the open, but in this carb they’re underneath the electric choke cover.
This looks good advice. For Betty the Bay's benefit, I just checked mine and the adjustment is pretty much in the centre of the threaded section rather than all the way down. I set mine up on the bench using a piece of 0.6 mm MIG wire as a gauge in the main bottom flap. That's where it should sit at fast idle, then when it warms up it should progressively close until the main flap is at 0.1 mm, sitting on the throttle stop.
