Cheer up, theres people worse off than you.

  1. Does that line ever work on someone with depression?

Someone said it to me today and it just made me want to smack them in the face.

  2. Short answer: no it doesn't.

  3. We all have problems. Believe me, I'd blow your mind if I told you mine. It'd be like reading a fiction novel. Unbelievable, some of it. I've really seen it all. Actually, that can't be true. What I mean is: nothing could ever surprise me. But, as far as I care - I have my freedom. I have my health. I am loved and I love. I am alive. Really, what else matters? I can't think of anything. Yes, there really are people worse off than you. There're folk out there right now gasping for their last breath. They would give everything up just to live another day.

  4. so so so VERY true , Baydreamers, i was with a family member as they died , struggled for just one more second of this life , (which had been one cursed with cancer ) as regards the acual "statement" i simply do not get it , is it supposed to cheer one up? cos it don"t .,or pull you up short with the realisation ? i think as it has the "cheer up" part , its supossed to make me feel better ?(forchristsakes) cos there are!! people worse of than me! well ,for the record ,i never feel better on hearing it.

My standard response to this statement is, 'go away and cheer them up then'. I may swear in real life ;)

  9. 2 out your three poptop, are opinions , the scotish one says a lot about you >ever heard of james clark maxwell ?try googling his name.oh and there is no slur re the scottish one , its when people come out wiv what to me is low brow purile crap based on a persons place of birth i.e. its where his/her mother was when event happened,(birth) nothing more , i inwardly groan.i grew up in an inviroment of " i hate /we hate the English" funnily , they who hold that equally dumb opinion are , well, dumb , and usually never left the housing scheme ever, they
were born into.Every one is a child of the earth , a moment in space time.

  10. Worse off ??: can mean money, can mean health , can mean happiness, can mean almost anything, but how can people judge what is worse or better for any other person.
Cheer up??:Some look like they are dealing with something when really they are falling apart ,others look like they are falling apart but are couping and happy with their lot.
IMO its a stupid statement , some think it should make you feel better ?? especially when someone compairs someone else with someone that doesnt even live in the same circumstances. But we all have our own opinions and reasons for feeling like we do.Huh

I have my problems and i would not want anyone having to put up with what i am going through let alone worse

So Why would i be happier knowing someone else is suffering more than i am.

  12. "Cheer up, there's people worse off than you".

A doctor actually said this to a friend with depression recently. Absolutely unbelievable.

  15. "Cheer up?"

Please don't tell me to cheer up, as a punch in the mouth often offends.

Not that I would actually do that in real life, but you should usually expect a negative response, normally involving swear words.

  17. My old boss once told me to cheer up during the middle of a very delicate family matter ... I bit my tongue and later went into his office to explain what was happening and handed in my notice .... He was a *****.

Never tell anyone to cheer up or that people are worse off than them as each person is different and NO ONE knows how someone else is feeling

Theres absolutely nothing wrong with telling someone to cheer up. In some circumstances it may not be the right thing to say, but there are plenty of circumstances when it would be.

Using the reason that "there are people worse off than you" could be seen as gloating if you're inclined to be offended, or look for offense on behalf of others.

  19. Not at all. Regardless of the situation it's an insensitive thing to say.

Which part? "Cheer up" or "there are people worse off than you"?

As I said up there ^^^ sometimes it could be seen as insensitive but there are plenty of times when it wouldnt.

PS. Just re-read the first post. I'm not referring to people with depression, just in general.
