It is yes, not my photo but I did some work on hangar 2 at scampton a few years ago and he was still there then
The name is historically correct, why change it? Or does that make me racist (which Im not) for suggesting to keep it.... Surely the bigger story is more important..53 RAF aircrew lost and many Germans died during the attack..
So no waning about the dramatization of the deaths of hundreds, the destruction or the glorification of war. Just about the name of a dog. Our Dalmatian is called patch. Is this now offensive to people with one eye? History is history. Shouldn't change or hide from it. Sorry, just a port induced rant.
I got involved in the refurbishment of the 663 hangar 2 after good old Prince Charles visited it and was appalled that the hangar was in mothballs ( derelict) and demanded it be brought back to life in recognition of the squadron - and quite right . I went into Guy Gibsons derelict office and looked out over the empty hangar, i can't describe the feeling that came over me as I imagined him looking over his men preparing themselves for their raids .. An immensely eerie but proud feeling
Living in the true 'bomber county' of Lincolnshire, for me its everywhere. Even living in Grantham where the Dambuster raid was planned. There are old air fields everywhere. We were at the Red Lion pub the other week in East Kirkby and its full of pictures of the local bomber squadrons, even has a wooden table with the air crews name carved into it..We should never forget what those young men did and paid for what we have now.
Last Saturday I went to St Clement Danes Church, the Strand London. This is the RAFs church and has the badges of all their squadrons on the floor. Found my grandfathers squadron RAAF 454 squadron badge. Strange how a young man from Jarrow can be an air gunner in an Austrailan Squadron bombing German shipping and Italy during WW2. He had his cupola shot off with the round just missing his head by inches.
