When i'm bored i look on e-bay and dream of owning an old car that either a parent or grandparent had just for old times sake, my grandad had one of these and added bonus check the colour.

  6. Used to be loads of Oxfords and Cambridges in the scrap yards when I used to root around for spares in the 80s. There were always plenty at the banger racing as well - it's not good to be a popular banger racing car!

I quite fancy a 70s Volvo. My dad had a 240 from new (T Reg), took it to 250 k miles and I did a fair few in it. Seem to remember a regular 20 mpg though, so a bit thirsty!

  7. I thought I was the only one, who thought like this.
I can remember them all my father had:-

    A Ford Zodiac in black:-

Next we had an N Reg 1975 Renault 12 in brown:-

  9. Ha ha chris i learnt to drive in a brand new hillman avenger, blue, my instructor was an old boy with wooden leg, strict or what, dual controls and if you wasnt stopping when he thought you should ,hed dump his wooden leg on the brake and youd nearly fly through the windscreen . Yeh was naff he glued a matchbox in back corner of screen as an aid to line up, so you could reverse round corners easier. My dad had a zodiac too bench seat in the front 8). Zed cars lol

  10. I've heared from other people that the Avenger was a good car, ours was a bad one though.

  11. When I was a kid my dad had company cars and it was always exciting when he got a new one.

When the car turned up we all jumped into it and sat pressing all the buttons.
Imagine our excitement when we found out it talked!!!

It was a Renault 11 Electronic and was ace. It would speak to you if there was a problem or you could press a button and it would run through a full system check. This was super cool for a car in the mid 80s.

Once the car started overheating. When your car tells you this its a bit freaky!!! We all swear the car sounded a bit worried.

None of my friends believed me when I said it talked. The response was usually something like "and my car flies".

Sadly the car died when an arse ran into the back if it. My parents loved the car so much they tried to get another but to no avail.

So it wasn't an attractive car but we still loved it.

Rest in Peace Willy the Renault 11 Electronic.

  12. When we came back from Australia in 1970, I remember going out with my older brother(15) and my dad looking for a car to buy. I was 10 at the time and remember getting into Old Top Gear Rover P5B this and being blown away by the smell of leather.Loved em ever since and would love to have the time/space to by one one.Georgeous.

  13. Pater had a Wolsley Six - that was a lovely car

  14. The cars that stick in my mind are.......

My dads 72 Ford LTD Station Wagon from when he worked at the American Embassy in London.
He used to drop me off at Play School in it every morning.
My Cub Leaders black custom Vauxhall PB Cresta & then later his 76 Cadillac Eldorado convertable.
The most wonderful feeling cruising round "Downe" Cub Camp in Kent with the top down when all the other Cub groups had miserable old Mk1 Transits.
2nd Woolwich Cub Scout Group by the way.
Final memory & probably the funniest from my childhood was my dads brand new car he bought in 81.
    A Red Skoda Estelle 120LE.
    PGY982W......
Still remember the reg No, Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha.
At the time I thought only Beetles had their engine in the back.

    Woodylubber Obsessive compulsive name changer

  17. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

First car I remember was a Moggie Minor. You were allowed to kill your children in those days so I used to stand on the back seat, holding onto the back of the drivers seat for support. One day I was car-sick down between his back and the seat, he wasn't best pleased because he had to carry on a bit looking for somewhere to stop. The smell wouldn't go away so he sold it a few months later and bought a MK1 Cortina. Cool back lights.
