Brake fluid is hygroscopic so it can absorb moisture from the air around it. If there is too much water in the fluid and you're doing really heavy continuous braking the heat from the brakes will be transmitted into the brake fluid itself and if it reaches the boiling point of water 100deg the water will turn into a gas, which is compressible. What that means is that your braking action will do nothing other than making the tiny gas bubbles in the brake pipes get smaller and won't actually move the pistons.

Edit: so if it's on your bay you have nothing to worry about as you'll never be going fast enough.

Edit,,Edit: unless you've ripped the heart out of it and fitted a subaru engine, in which case, get the fluid changed. :)

I've never heard of changing "a bit" of the brake fluid, if they're going to change the lot and bleed the complete system then £40 isn't too bad. If it's just a syringe of fluid out of the master cylinder and a syringe of new stuff back in then I'd personally not bother.

  6. I don't really know if it's the full system. I suppose I should ask. But it does say 2% every 2 years

  7. Every time my Mrs puts her car in with Fords, we get the obligatory call. We recommend this that and the other, brakes filters blah blah blah. Evertime I call them back and ask if the parts are showing wear or are breaking down, there answer is always "No it's just a recommendation". Not once have we taken them up on their kind offer. My Mrs would probably get everything done they recommend if it wasn't for my intervention, that's how they make their money.

  8. I suspect that it indicates that the brake fluid is 2% hydro whatsit and that they'd replace it all as a precaution.

ANywhoo 944 went in for MOT, was sorted but chap says, 'we had to put in a litre of oil Bernard!'
He often puts in a litre of oil. I suspect that he checks my oil when the engine is hot, because I check it weekly when it is cold.
When I look again on Saturday, I expect the level to be a little high.
Not a bother really though, better safe than sorry and he does little bits & bobs without charging.

It's just a bit of give & take and sensible compromise really, just like Brexit will be.

  9. my vito was having trouble recognising the key in the ignition. After trying local garages including a Mercedes dealer I ended up in Warrington Mercedes commercial 1 hour away from home.I had to leave it for a day for them to diagnose £200.00 and return to have a control board fitted £1800.00.
2 months down the road I found local mechanic ( ex Mercedes ) he gets .PCBs from breakers and fits for £60.00

  10. Ouch!

  11. When my vito broke out in a bad case of rust they refused to treat it within the ten year warranty as the main dealership had not carried out the servicing, their argument being that they would have seen the rust when it appeared

  12. and then head the bare faced cheek to ask me if would like to buy a new van

I had a conversation with a customer yesterday. When they bought their new car they paid £300 for a scratch protection coating. If you get a scratch then the main stealer will sort it out apparently.

Guess what they got a call from the garage whilst I was there to say that none of the scratches are covered. Apparently the bonnet and tailgate aren't covered, the others are either over the maximum size stated in the policy or have gone too deep into the lacquer so aren't covered either. It's a complete scam to rob unsuspecting people of an extra 300 quid on a new motor.

    Feck main dealers.
