Car service scams

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by the2ems, Jun 7, 2017.

  1. Phoned to book our car in today for 2nd yearly service. Normally when I book they ask if I want the brake fluid replaced, because it's best to and it loses its properties and all that. Well in 49 years of car ownership, (not the same car) I've never had the brake fluid replaced, except if and when required after work being done on the braking system. Remember lying under the car with a bit of hose and a jam jar while your brother pumped the brake pedal?
Anyway. Today they asked did I want the engine flushed out? It helps to condition the engine to receive the new oil, and it also helps ultimately with fuel economy. It only costs £29 because I have a service contract with them. No thanks I said. She sounded quite surprised

I used to take my first bay into the local VW agent for service. Back in 1982 ish the bill was £79 every 3000 miles. My friend opened his own VW workshop some time later and would do mine for cost plus £10 labour total £21. He was an ex VW mechanic that learned at the place I used prior to using him and used all the same parts as they did.

  6. If it's just a chuck a can in engine flush you can do that yourself for a couple of quid at home. Then drive it to them just prior to them actually dropping the oil. Job done.

  7. Do your own servicing, its cheaper and you know its been done, and you learn.

  8. Btw engine flushes are not recommended at all on some engines e.g. 1.8t. There is a real danger sludge and gunk can dislodge blocking the pick up gauze causing low oil pressure, phooked timing chain tensioners and a heap of other crap.

  19. We were told on our cars first 10.000 miles service the key fob battery needs changing, cost £31.00 my answer 'is is just one 2032?' YES he said, well I can buy 5 of these for £1, so no thank you. The same battery has been in for 3 years now and the car handbook shows how to change this very easy!!!
