  1. I have a 73 bay and its going for acid dipping on Saturday so i need to remove the mech, i have taken the top mech off with the three screws, removed the screws holding the bottom mech in place, now the whole thing is free and moving around just wont come away from the door, do i need to remove the outer handle? i cant seem to find a grub screw

I know the screws are in in the top image but they are all removed

the only thing left on is the top rod going to the other end of the door and the small lock catch the white one

I think if you pop the cover off the centre of the inner handle there is a screw

undo the screw under the inner handle centre cover and both inner and outer handles should slide out

  4. yeah ive done that its all removed the screw and the handle but it wont budge even with a bit of hammer persuasion! im stuck

  5. take the inner handle off completely and you should see the square shaft for the outer handle.

sounds like it might have seized into the mech ...unusual but possible.

screw the mech back on the door to hold it in place, squirt some penetrating spray (or WD40( around where the square shaft goes through the mech. leave it half an hour then wiggle the outer handle vigorously and see if it frees up, if not give the end of the square shaft a few taps with a hammer from the inside of the door (careful not to damage) and it should come out

There's nothing else holding the outside handle on, once you've undone the screw from the inside handle its supposed to just slide out,

  7. has yours got the lock in the handle?

You have my sympathy, I have a rusty one in my workshop that's the same, despite lump hammer and drift on the square end, and remember the door is scrap so I don't care about that, it won't budge.

  9. the whole inner lock mech is loose and the square bit moves in and out of the mech but it just wont come away from the door! The barrel is still in the outer handle ive hit it so hard the square has deformed!

So you've now got it moving, but you have a new problem that the end has mushroomed and now won't fit through? Not going well is it. lol

It has probably mushroomed more than you realise.

push the handle back to touching the door with the lock screwed in place and file down the end of the square bit...A few hundredths of a millimetre may be all you need.

  15. Drill it out, and new outer handle time... I've had a few do this... pretty typical for cast parts with dry assembly

Get a standard house door handle shaft stick it in the handle and beat it out
