Anyone have a personal recommendation, please? Below Manchester area, within reasonable distance of M6 and that's likely to be open? Much appreciated.
It’s a long time ago but we camped here. Nice place near Jodrell Bank ( no jokes please @Barry Haynes ) It is open, though in common with a lot of campsites, the shower blocks are closed for the time being.... https://www.capesthorne.com/caravan-park/
What sort of thing are you looking for Andrew? There is a nice little campsite in Edale called Waterside Farm, no hook-ups but they do have nice clean facilities and the owner has always made us feel welcome whenever we have stayed. Edale village is ten minutes walk away with a couple of good pubs and some excellent, scenic walks too. @paulcalf and @Merlin Cat have some cracking get away spots around the Peak District.
Thanks. I don't need a hookup, shower and toilet would be a bonus. I have been stuck at home since mid March, I live on my own. I am getting to the "licking the wallpaper stage". I am after a change of scenery, perhaps take my walking boots, so nothing special. Happy to cook, in fact enjoy open air cooking etc.
My favourite site at Hayfield near Kinder Scout isn't opening this year or I'd recommend that. When I say favourite I mean it's the only place I go camping nowadays.
They have showers and toilets which have been spotless whenever we've stayed. Have a taster: https://twolatebays.wordpress.com/waterside-farm-edale-may-2016/
Park House Campsite Ashford Lane Monsal Head Bakewell Derbyshire DE45 1NJ 01629 640463 No idea if open this year. No kids Quiet V near Monsal trail for walking or bikes. Big pub at Monsal Head V small real ale pub 5 mins walk away in little Longstone
Coopers Farm in Edale is a busier option, if you want interaction with people? Entertainment from crazy farmer who will tell you you have done the wrong thing, parked in the wrong spot etc etc. Sometimes you just turn up and get told you should have booked. Sometimes you try and book and get told to just turn up. Loads of good walking near by. Pub is v close to campsite You may bump into Jarvis Cocker. Not stayed here for a long time
Do you have to be South Of Manchester? If not consider Goredale Scar Campsite (near Malham, in North Yorkshire Dales). Not that far from the M6. Malcolm is the most entertaining of campsite owners. Great walks Lots of pubs in Malham
Peak district: @merlincat likes Hardhurst Farm, Near Hope, Castleton & Edale Rowter Farm - a very basic campsite at the top of Winnats Pass (high up near Mam Tor) above castleton Can be very windy, big walk back up the Hill if you go to the pubs in Castleton Duke of York, Pomery near Buxton https://www.thedukeofyorkpomeroy.co.uk/camping-caravans/
I think so. The owner, she is possibly in her late mid to late 60's so she could be vulnerable. I hope she is okay, she always came for a chat whenever we had a get together up there.
Hardhurst Farm in Hope is my fave local. Haven’t spoken to them since before July 4th when they were considering opening. Fairly basic shower/toilets that they May not be opening.
+1 for Monsal head , we stayed in the pub but cycled the trail and walked along the valley - the mill was derelict (now a posh hotel ) probably stayed well before the campsite was developed . I`ve since stayed further down the valley towards Buxton behind a pub , The Royal oak rings a bell and it was lovely or the Hope / Castleton area is gorgeous and well worth an easy bimble up Mam Tor . There`s plenty of small sites and it`s a gorgeous area - get down there man !! (and post some pics , some of my best adventures have been impromtu solo escapades ...)
