Cable Colours?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by the crumpets, Feb 14, 2013.

  1. One of the jobs are am going to start tackling is neating up the wiring in the cab.

I have got all sorts of various wires and colours behind the dash, even 3 core 240v cable.

Could anyone tell me the colours of the wires that should be there i.e. live/positive, negative and earth and any other colours that should be there and going to what

Or could any one push me towards where i can find the information.

    Once again thanks in advance

  2. Get yourself a decent colour wiring diagram from www.vintagebus.com. They're not that hard to understand.

  3. Cheers Snotty, Knew there was something out there just didn't know where it was

  4. Brown is earth wires (No 31) Red is permanent live (No 30) Black is positive only when ignition is on (No 15)

  5. brown is also used as a live for the fuel sender (or some times brown with white trace) so be careful :D

  6. Technically the fuel sender is a variable resistance earth (brown with white tracer)

Other browns to look out for are horn, main beam (high/low).. might be a couple more, but I'm having a blank!!

  7. I don't believe VW, being diligent Germans, would ever use brown for for a live feed. That would be most disorderly. Brown/white is traditionally a VW switched earth (as on your door switches).

Having a good clean up behind the dash is a good idea - it's most satisfying to strip out all of the spaghetti. It's pretty obvious which is original wiring: nice old school vinyl cable in a variety of colours, with brass crimps on the end. Anything involving mains cable or stuff with blue crimps on the end is likely to be an "improvement". The wiring diag'll show you what's what.

  8. Door pin switches... see, I knew I'd forgotten one  lol

  9. Fella, loads easier to just take out the whole dash. It sounds like grief but really it's the best way to see everything without becoming furious! I used the vintage wiring diagram too along with my Bentley manual. Good luck :)

  10. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

I like to remove the windscreen and dash top, you can see and get at everything very easily then.

All the best buses have holes in the windscreen surround. ;)

Hopefully it won't be as bad as this.

  11. If your looking at cable colours in dark spots using an led torch be carefull
Ive found some led torches slightly change the colours you see and a red could look like a brown etc

Its not overly complicated behind there and all the wires are colour coded so take your time and im sure you will be fine
