Buying/upgrading or rebuild engine

  1. Just thinking for over the winter I need to do some thing with the engine but what?
    Do I rebuild my 1.6 engine or do I look for a 1.8/2ltr engine because just need that bit more power.
    What price do I aim for, anyone recommend an engine builder or 2ltr engine. Do I need to change
    the wire loom/gear box for bigger engine.

    Also don't forget that if you go 2l type 4, then realistically you'll want the gearbox too :)
     
  4. Depends on what you want to do with it.

    1600 power won't ever do you anything in the power stakes but type 1's can be taken to big power if you spend the money and have a decent engine builder

    Type 4 1800 bus engines aren't so common, most common of the 3 is actually the 1700. You can easily upgrade this to an 1800 but a good 1700 is a better choice of the 3 in my humble opinion. If you can get a 914 or 411 1800 with 'big valve' heads even better, but again, they're harder to come by.

    A good 2 litre in a bay will be dependable and will give you a big step up on a bog standard 1600. Its a strong smooth engine.

    Wiring and gearbox wise there is no need to change anything, however, if you're going type 4 you'll need to get a complete turnkey as nothing carries over between the 2 types of engine, save for maybe the later style of chassis mounts. If you get a 2 litre engine you'll either need to get a larger bell housing on the gearbox or a smaller flywheel and clutch for the engine. Price is down to what you want to pay. I've just written similar in a thread on for sale so take a look at comments on there from others too

  6. Well this winter went by with me only thinking on buying a westie roof, so this winter just want to get it fixed in my head so I don't think about getting a re-spray lol. That will be the following winter and if money comes my way :beer:
     
  7. I can't do links on my phone, its in classifieds type 4 engine wanted for my 1978 westy. Lots of responses on there. Here is mine...

    The odd £100 bargain crops up now and again but they're few and far between and usually only good for the ancillaries. £500 should just about get you a complete turnkey, but expect to then pay 3 times that on parts to rebuild, will likely want camshaft, lifters, bearings maybe some head work. That's assuming you do all the work yourself. £1k should get you a good runner but you will want to know and trust the seller and know the engines history. Just because it runs doesn't make it good. I can just about build a bog standard motor for myself with most new parts (b+p's, valves cam etc) for about £2k. That's relying on local shops to do any machining/engineering. One of Paul's specials I'm guessing will come in at around the £5k mark but that will get you power and longevity.

    Personally I would avoid any of the £1k long blocks you see which have been 'remanufactured'. In my opinion it's virtually impossible to procure all of the new parts they list and do the amount of work they claim to do for the price. You get what you pay for in the end.

  8. You could always rebuild your type 1 motor and take it out to 1776, no need to change the gearbox to a 6-rib. What sort of budget are you looking at ?
     
  9. Budget what's that :thinking: lol. Ok I would say at a push to rebuild my own engine £500 max.
     
  10. You might at a push get enough decent new replacement bits to redo your type 1 for that depending in how much you wanted to change or what needs changing.

  11. My brother has just swapped his golf mk2 gti engine and has it lying in the back garden, can this engine be used on my bus like swap engines? I hear polo engines being used. What other vw engines would work on a bus.
