Bumper painting

  1. My front and rear bumpers are pretty tired looking. I can beat the dents out (I think! They seem pretty thick metal)
But can I get a decent finish at home with rattle cans? Or should I just send them to the local sprayer?

If I was looking to do mine, I'd try Rustoleum.
Seems to get a good finish.

  3. You can get a perfectly good finish with rattle cans. Particularly if you go to a proper paint factor - their cans spray really nicely: better than the Halfords ones. Get them to mix you L90D in cellulose and it'll go on like a dream if you've prepped properly.

  6. So what’s the process then, sand down to what grade? Then primer, then celly top coat from a can. Buff to a shine after?

Whatever you see before you top coat will be your finish in terms of scratches. The bus up there hasn't been polished - for a shine out of the can paint it as "wet" as you dare.

  10. Autopaints in St Helens will sell you some nice rattle can two-pack

  11. Won’t I need a face mask for that?

  12. Nope. I’ve no idea how they do it in a can, but the stuff I’ve used goes on well.

  13. I was looking at Auto paints yesterday.
Their website says they are closed due to Covid 19

If you email them, if it's in stock they'll post if it's requires mixing, then you're out of luck.

Nitrocellulose is not nice to breathe in. 2k is even worse. Always use a mask and spray in a well ventilated area, unless you're using a proper industrial face mask

I'll also add that nitrocellulose is easier to get a decent finish, as each coat will blend into the previous coat - which makes it a little easier to sand back any runs and touch it up, as it effectively becomes a single layer. 2k will show witness marks if you sand through a coat, requiring another full coat to cover.
