Building a stock 1600cc - Flywheel/clutch sizing

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by JohnSly, Jul 15, 2015.

  1. I m building a 1600cc stock engine to go into my 1978 bay - i not 100% sure on what size flywheel to go for ?
Do i just go for a standard 200mm flywheel and clutch kit to go with it or 215mm flywheel and clutch kit ?
Apart for the 15mm whats the difference ??
This is going into a hire camper so it needs to be robust !!

When i got my van it had a 180 mm clutch plate with a 200 mm flywheel, new 200mm fitted all around and its a realy smooth setup , no grabbing or biting

  3. The engine that was in the camper before had a 215mm flywheel with a 200mm clutch plate, still worked..didnt do the flywheel much good though :) its all groovy!
Think i will go with that setup, thanks sproggy...the guys at custom and commerical say they sell a lot of 200mm stuff so will go with that!

200mm clutch kit £80. Uses 8mm x20 bolts easy to find.
215mm clutch kit £109. Uses 7mm x 20 bolts from a more specialist supplier. Pedal is heavier.

If you have a choice go 200mm.

I did not because I trashed my crank and flywheel and the very late AS engine I bought came with a 215mm flywheel.

The 200mm used to be the only one you could buy just the friction plate (say you're old one was soaked in oil for some reason, can't think how that could happen  )
Google thinks it still is, but the VW heritage site is down.

  6. You can buy all of the friction discs separately now, apart from the 210mm...

And I'd be fitting the 215mm, vw upgraded them for a reason ;)
