Speaking of which... Before this happened, the van was burning oil. I had it on 15W-40 as per the Haynes manual. This local garage replaced this oil with 5W-30 as, in their opinion, that may stop the problem. And apparently it did... the white smoke and smell disappeared (mostly). I always thought 5W-30 is not good for the hot weather we have here in Spain, but I decided to keep it as it seemed to stop the problem.
I suppose the origin of the two problems is the same, something is not OK in one particular cylinder. I suppose this 5W-30 oil shows it less, that's all. I guess I should move to maybe 10W-40 once the engine is repaired, correct? Thanks
How many kms has the engine done? Has it ever been overhauled? I use 15W-40 throughout the year. On a well used engine 20W-50 is more appropriate, especially in high temperatures.
On a T2 type 4 the fan shroud design directs more air to the right side of the engine, the left side has less flow especially to no.3 cylinder. Presumably that’s oil temperature? No problem for the oil at 120degC but the pressure would be low. It’s cylinder head temperature that is the real problem, especially no.3. Why, Spanish drivers?
Interesting, thanks. Unfortunately, I don't know the answer to either question, so I presume no overhaul, otherwise I would have an invoice.
I guess head temp is then the most important in terms of getting dash reading. We are all gentle, cheerful people here!
As above , do a comp test. This tells you a lot about an engine. If 1 or more cylinders shows a fairly substantial drop in PSI, then do a leak down test. To be fare if the local garage isn't clued up on these engines DONT let them touch it.
Oh no - it's turning into a What Oil thread - but I agree - 5w-30 is too thin. I always stick with 20w-50 on my high mileage engine
I wouldn't make many what oil questions without doing some search work first, I'd assume there's plenty written about that already. I thought the higher the numbers, the thinner the oil. I now realise I got it completely wrong and it's the opposite way around.
Concise and to the point, Sir! I shall find out how each of "guides", "bores" and "rings" translate to moneys through workmanship hours. Thanks.
