But who will check them? A copper can sit in warm car and check anyway without squinting at a tax disc. With ANPR they can check humdreds, thousands very quickly and easily.

You may care, but the powers that be have washed their hands and more or less abandoned car crime. If it was a big a problem it wouldn't be difficult to go through the data and nick everyone but they don't bother. Perhaps this rather than visible discs is the real problem.

  2. To my knowledge not all cars are fitted with ANPR

  3. There is a cop car fitted with the ANPR camera on top that goes past ours frequently.

The average speed cameras use ANPR, I assumed they were linked to enforcement?

Pretty sure google maps cars have it too.

  5. Some speed cameras are linked to ANPR . Matey was driving down the A3 locally, didn't trip any speed cameras but was stopped by a copper sat in a layby and told he had no insurance...
Turns out his policy was one digit out on the registration number , so a quick phone call and that was solved but the copper said mateys car number was flagged up by the speed cameras he'd just passed ...

  6. probably one of those new digital ones, glad he sorted it quickly

  7. Theoretical scenario - if you have insurance and you have an accident a day after your tax expired (you'd forgotten to renew the tax), does this mean that the insurance company will not pay out? And also, does it automatically give you a 'driving with no insurance' problem?

If you are stopped for no tax and you had insurance they wouldnt do you for no insurance

No road tax here its included in a fuel tax saving on admin costs, but we have to display a valid insurance disc.

Insurance discs are a good idea.
I don't care if I'm hit by an untaxed vehicle....now uninsured is another matter.

Well..that system works in Poland (tax in fuel) for over 20 years now..think in this country it’s just another cash cow for the government as the car tax for some cars/vehicles cost a fortune!..I remember bach in the day when I was on the search for my first car, the car tax system was based on the engine capacity..it really limited my choice of cars backthen..remember I was looking for a decent ford taunus (cortina) or even better a consul/granada..they were diet cheap and mate of mine was selling his for peanuts..it was white with black vinyl roof, 3 litre automatic with sunroof..always wanted one..it had engine issues but who cared back then..petrol was cheap just that tax..grr..finally got a beetle..never regretted..sorry for the rant...

  18. Road tax will always be an emotive issue, tax on fuel? I pay £20/year for my Mercedes, nothing for the camper.
It would mean abolishing no tax for "Historic" vehicles and raise the tax for ultra low emission vehicles.
Let's be honest even an electic has an emission and pollution output, tyre and asphalt dust plus the materials used in build has a carbon footprint and it does require charging, it doesn't run on fairy dust as some are led to believe.
But the question is how do you ensure and easily show you have paid your road/vehicle tax?
