Brakes..........What are the options?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by top banana racing, Sep 25, 2015.

  1. With Bill going 300hp Scooby, I've been thinking about brakes.
Both Ted and Freddie have new discs, drums, calipers etc but the mahoosive difference is the Servo, it really makes Ted feel modern and capable of locking up all four wheels whereas Freddie feels like my 60's Beetle, where I have to write for permission to slow down.
Clearly I can refurbish everything that Bill has but what other options are there? Or is there any point as I know a fully refurbed stock system can lock up the wheels and that is the most braking you can have, any more is superfluous. Although for how long they could keep that up is a different matter.

  2. Red9design do a rear disc conversion. Think they can do big discs and calipers up front too.

  4. You have two options ............

    ........ Stop & Go!

  5. Paint them red and fit a Phat Boy exhaust and LEDs underneath. Halfords will sell you all the stuff you need.

Porsche brakes will fit, it's only four bolts.
A bloke at the pub knows a bloke whose mates cousin in laws nephew told him so.

  10. funny how someone has'nt invented vented disc's up front ,makes a big difference imo..

  11. There are disc brake kits out there .futbus do one that uses golf vented discs and calipers .or 944 vented front and rear discs or creative do a front and rear disc kit ..I have vented discs and to be honest it doesn't make that much difference over stock

I mentioned it when I was going to Scooby the kids doka, but the common consensus was ' a good set of brakes should be good enough. I don't think a bog standard set up will be up to the job. Imo!

  13. More details...?

I've currently got 944 turbo brakes all round, and I'll pull up a hell of a lot quicker than any other van I've ever driven...

Increased rubber contact with the road is a must though!!

  14. Going down mountains and from 100mph to stop will be better (cooler)..

  15. its singlepot 944 calipers and discs ......as original under heavybraking I could easily skip the back tyres .....sure they will be better over continued braking but

they are big drums on a bay

  16. Brembos with a servo is where it's at... But that means stepping up to 16in rims!!

It might be better going the 'spike in the middle of the steering column' route and keeping it fairly stock as a permanent reminder not to go so quick you will roll it going into a corner and braking hard...
