Brake bleed nipples

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by parhamandy, Aug 13, 2012.

  1. does anyone have detail on the specification for the brake bleed nipples.

I have had a look online and just a bit confused and dont want to buy something i dont want.

i know a 7mm spanner fits mine but its the thread size and length im not sure on. not sure if it a 6mm or 7mm thread?

And the other thing is a couple of the existing nipples are rounded so i cant undo them, anyone have any tips to get them out??

Please anyone if you can help it would be greatly appreciated.

Carefully applied pump pliers or mole grips should get the old ones out, provided you dont twist as you pull the pliers round.

And if the old ones snap off something is telling you its time for new calipers or cylinders.

  4. ^this. Give the nipples a good scrub/squirt of penetrating oil, or maybe a bit of heat. They'll likely be rusted in place and are just dying to snap off.

  5. thanks for the hints, think could be time for some new cylinders

  6. for reference they are M7x1.0

  7. If they snap off build up a good blob of weld on them and then unwind with molegrips

Its far cheaper to refurbish callipers than it is to buy new

    What he said ^
The rears are as cheap as chips though...

  9. I always heat rusty bleed nipples up to a cherry red even before attempting to undo them... the amount of times they'll just shear as soon as you put a spanner on them...

I agree some extra help in the form of heat or oil will be good. I could feel one or two of mine almost shearing off instead of undoing.

A bit like the feeling when I undid the rear wheel nuts and as they came undone something started bending instead- it was the breaker bar...
