Wasn't this one was it? It was one of my favourites. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Treasury-Childrens-Stories-Hilda-Boswell/dp/0001203045
I never really read fiction and still don't. One book I remember from an early age is Which I still have.
The Weirdstone of Brisingamen - freaked me out as a kid all about old celtic magic and other nonsense.
Meg and Mog was a big favourtite of mine plus all of The Faraway Tree books (I still have an old original copy that I cherish - did you know they've changed their names from Dick and Fanny - where's the fun in that!) A big thing to hit our primary school was the Storyteller magazines and tapes! I was obssessed by Gobbolino the Witches Cat and Timbertwig and hate that I got rid of them all when I was a stupid teenager http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Story_Teller_(Marshall_Cavendish)
I loved Richard Scarry. I've been carting around a box of children's books since I left my parents' many many years ago and was only thinking at the weekend I haven't seen it for a while. Will go and rummage in the loft and see if I can find it - there should be a Richard Scarry in there and I think it had different stories.
