Cheers Dunc. If you're at TE this weekend and (edit) anybody else who has done spraying, it would be great to pick your brain/s...once you've stopped chuckling at my attempts. Seriously and self depreciation aside, I'd value some tips about fixing the current issue and way forward. I'm enjoying this as I learn...I thinko_O

So many things can go wrong and while one is getting to grips they tend to happen one at a time.

You have to laugh or you'd loose the will to live.
Someone once told me if I was lacquering and getting a sag I could apply more and "run it off the bottom of the panel". Have you ever seen those candles in a bottle students used to make with the wax eventually covering the bottle? Think that/whole rear arch panel. That took some flatting and I didn't want to go through to the colour so it was slow. lol.

My van's colour was due to another disaster.
I previously did a load of bodywork repairs on Dean Butler's van at the front - front panel, arches, B-posts and some at the rear. The van was metallic silver/goldy sort of colour, no code. Impossible to match, I had a couple of attempts. Gave up in the end and to get it finished asked Dean to pick a colour that I then painted the entire van. Yep, top/bottom/doors/roof, the lot all for a failed colour match but what can you do? He picked that green and as they hated the silver anyway it all worked out well in the end, I thought it looked great so I copied him.

    Getting there part 1....

Those quarter lights are troublesome but brut force and ignorance won out in the end. I may buy a new set of trim as mine are looking tired but they're not cheap:eek:

Thanks Phil. It is such a shame that I'll have to redo the red paint after my holiday as I messed up (see above).

But for now I'm really looking forward to my holiday.

Looking fab Chris! Reskinning that door was definitely the way to go.
I avoided painting the blue on ours this weekend as the weather was naff, hoping to get onto it this weekend now.

@Zed, there's an expression, 'stupid is as stupid does'....as I'm actually planning to slowly go round the whole camper bit by bit and do the lot.....I think the appropriate word is slowly!

Except for that stupid mistake I would have been happy with the end result. At least I didn't have to do all the sanding and end polishing this time round :p

As you've said, it's all part of the journey.
I had to re-lacquer the front clip on our van, and painted the sliding door 3 times due to mistakes I made along the way.

    I did these today outside

I’ll be doing them again tomorrow , inside when I’ve flatted the dust and flies off

The Bulgarian painter down my yard is forever painting outside (often with no top on).
I don't know how he does it as the paintwork always looks pretty good despite the dust and debris swirling round the yard!

I will be redoing the bottom half of the door at some point due to my mistake with the wax mentioned above, however I also shouldn't have rushed to finish it as I noticed soon after that I just had not prepared the sub base well enough in my rush to finish and after washing the van yesterday I saw how bad a job I'd done. Slapped wrist and all that, must do better!

  18. High build primer and a flexible long block are your friends when it comes to cab doors.
