I’d go for it unless you’re painting outside?

Me too, I might think twice if it was a whole shell. The back street type painters around where I worked liked it when it rained, apparently there's generally less dust floating about. But they'd paint when it was prepped (almost) whatever the weather.

Morning's elbow grease finished....as is the grey paint. Fair to say, I'm happy with the results. Not perfect, but I'm very happy. Thanks for all of the help. Time for lunch and then decide if the red goes on today:thumbsup: IMG_20230506_120119959.jpg IMG_20230506_120109970.jpg IMG_20230506_113456918.jpg

    Nice!
I think it's best to leave it a few days before you mask for the red, frustrating though that is, it's not as frustrating as peeling off the tape to find you ruined the grey coat.

Bugger...I'm not sure what has gone wrong, but there must have been some product, maybe from the polishing of the upper door, on the base that has caused the red paint to pull away from primer/filler coat. The pictures are after 3 coats so I'm calling it a day. I'm going to let it dry, put the door back together and fix this after the holiday unless somebody comes up with a better plan?

I'm guessing il have to sand back to base and redo the whole bottom skin to make sure the purity has been removed.

Silver lining is my paining is getting a lot of practice!

Ignore the flash in the photos.

You polished the top before you painted the bottom. ??? Yikes!!!!
    Lesson learned. :(
The longer you wait before you polish the better anyway so it shouldn't normally be a problem. There's a lot of waiting in painting if you don't have infra red panels and all that.

At other times it pays to go like the clappers.
I started high build priming my shell inside and out at 4pm
Inside first with one good coat, I had plans, then all the rest, 2 coats.
By the time I'd cleaned the gun it was all flashed off and the inside ok to walk on.
I put the (gale force!) extractor on, used and airline and scuffed all the inside free of overspray dust.
Then one good topcoat on the inside and tidy up.
    Finished at midnight.
Then the massive advantage of one colour outside meant one mask and paint, job done. That applied to the doors as well. And you can't get the line wrong if there isn't one. That line has to match all the way round.

Lesson learnt indeed. I thought I could avoid the grey slurry coming off the top grey spoiling the red afterwards...

Now to find a nice sticker to cover the damage for TE:p

Annoyingly it looks really good (to my eyes) and I got the cut line spot on.

When I rattle canned a whole van on the drive, odd little bits pickled where I must have exposed some earlier paint mine didn't agree with. The only way I could find to stop it after experimenting with the assortment of your normal DIY stuff everyone has was paint those bits with Kurust.. so I did. lol

    Here's a more random tip.
Get an aerosol can of Upol Isopon Zinc182 primer, about a tenner from Halfords etc. It's lovely, it forms a thin smooth coat really easily.
If, while flatting your primer coat (the one you intend to topcoat) you go through here and there worry not.
20 mins or so, and last operation before you topcoat blow those bits in with the aerosol, don't worry it's it's opaque, you just need a coat. It'll have flashed off before you've mixed your topcoat which will chemically bond to it so no need to key.

And keep your aerosol can in a bucket of warm water - the warmer the paint is, the finer it sprays.

No issue at all...if you could just spot my cock ups before I do them, I'd appreciate it :p

It’s a nightmare painting and we had similar issues with Major here and there.

On Gusbus we had the left hand cab door looking superb, nice even coat, nice shine and some twonk knocks a ladder flying onto the door. Never did get it right again & couldn’t get the blending of the marks right.

I'm sure there would have been a queue of people saying woah there if you'd said you were going to polish. :p
Sorry if you did and I missed it. :)

I didn't mention my plan and no need at all for an apology as you have all been very helpful. I'm learning loads so although it's a pain, it's not the end of the world. I need to keep things cleaner, including getting as much dust out of the area as looking at the finish, it has picked up some crap from the air as well...I know I don't have a booth, but I can make it better next time. :)

My routine is flat previous coat, wipe, dry, wipe with panel wipe/degreaser, wipe with a new clean tac rag then next coat.
