I have a 73 bay window (L reg) and have My number plates on the white background as you see these days, however have noticed some vehicles which are Younger than mine on the black and white plates. Is it possible for me to get the black and white plates for my van?
Just found this so might be ok. Black number plates with white or silver characters are permitted on vehicles manufactured before 1st January 1973.
Just read some stuff on Wikipedia saying its based on 1st Jan 73 ... but have read stuff in the past that says otherwise
whs^just chuck em on ,the old bill dont even know the rules on classics.......theres one down columbia road thats a late period bay and got silvers on,seem to think that people of police dont care anymore ....
Taken from the dvla web site Traditional plates for vehicles constructed before 1 January 1973 Vehicles constructed before 1.1.1973 may display traditional style “black and white” plates i.e. white, silver or grey characters on a black plate.
The copper that pulled us up for spaced lettering, said it was ok to have b&w plates on any vehicle registered b4 sept 1973. Although it would seem to make sense for it to coincide with the vehicle tax 1st jan '73. another reason to have a '72 built van .
I always thought an early L plate was the last of the legal black and whites. Certainly, anything from an M plate onwards on black and white is illegal and you'll get a fine if pulled by the cops.
Yeh it is manufactured ,which makes a bit of a farce of it coz to get plates made up legally you should produce your Registation document which has when its registered on it??? The plates if black and silver and made up for a later than 73vehicle should have for display purposes only sticker on back not to be used on road. Tis true cos i had black and silver, when i took them off their it is on the back, soooo i enquired and yep you can get pinched if they want to pinch you but with border line cases they run the risk that you were manufactured a good while before you were registered. Typical british laws. I changed mine as when go abroad its easier to have the european style plates. And as said you would need a knowledgeable mr plod whos upset to get pinched i would think??
