The only person getting wound up is you. Take a chill pill!

As for clubs going under I think you need to look at the set up rather than the support Well, definitely at my club W, warriors. That was financial mismanagement because they had no support previous to being set up as a rugby club a few years back after the financiers were knocked back for a buyout of Worcester city football club.

Englands tactics may not suit you but if the Welsh at finished third in the WC we’d all be saying how well they did and you’d be pontificating on the virtues of tactical pliability!

I’m not in the slightest wound up.

Wales never play rugby like that, never have, probably never will….it’s an utterly moot point.

I’m not a fan of a 3rd place play off, it’s waste of time and hugely unfair on players, it’s a nothing game….we’ve played in 3 over the years, all utterly meaningless where there’s nothing to play for.

Worcester Warriors hardly ever filled their stands….same thing killed Irish and Wasps….even tigers don’t always fill their stands….same lower down the leagues.

That’s ignoring all the small clubs literally dying as men aren’t playing anymore. My old club used to put out 7 senior men’s teams on a Saturday….they struggle to put our 2 now.

The game is dying….the product is poor at club level and in Englands case, at international level.

If you don’t want to believe that that 100% fine with me….I’m sounding the clarion call that all nations are sounding around the world.

Why is Twiickeham full of stag doo’s and men in their late 50’s only content with bragging rights?

    These are worrying times.

  3. Why is promotion of rugby here so poor,

    Maybe..
70% of people in the uk,
dont know there is a world cup taking place..

I’m with you on some of those points entirely but as for the warriors not filling their stands I think the crowds were very good for a new team. The beer was expensive but the stands were always quite full whenever I went to Friday night games. I’m still quite upset the club has folded tbh.

As for wales never playing that time of game, it’s a bit like Man Utd traditionally playing attacking football, all very well when it goes well but any team worth it’s salt will work them out easily as it doesn’t change from game to game. And you know I was a great fan of Barry John, JPR W, Gareth edwards and Barry john in particular we’ve had that conversation before, but Wales aren’t going to change and that’s why they’re regarded as poorer technically. Football fever is sweeping Wales I’ve noticed as I travel around more and more football pitches at the schools etc. so I suppose that is having a grassroots effect. Come up kiddy any Sunday and see if it’s dying, you can’t get a car in after ten and the kids are there in their droves. The organisation is brilliant and very well run.

I know it’s not over yet, but this has been the worst World Cup in living memory.
I’m not even sure why. Maybe the fact the laws become ever more unintelligible, the inconsistent refereeing, who knows?
I can’t remember ever being more disinterested.
Imho World Rugby are killing the game.

  7. I disagree with the worst world cup, there were plenty of very close if not technically correct matches but World Rugby are certainly heading in the wrong direction. Over use of VAR has ruined the game in my 'umble opinion and mutated from being the last resort in a close call to almost every discision being looked at with the referee bricking it over a wrong call and crucified by the post match TV pundits and social media .
I live just down the road from Twickenham and have tried on several occasions to buy a couple of tickets for england matches but absolutely no chance, they all seem to go to corporate or rugby clubs but I don't mind as there's a cracking back street boozer with a great atmosphere in Richmond...

    South Africa for the win

I’ve always loved the World Cup; this time I’ve been disinterested. For me, it’s been the worst World Cup I can remember.

It's the rules, teams are now focussed on getting the opposition to break one. It's become like footy where teams would rather "win" a free kick than just play the ruddy game.

Kids rugby on a Sunday morning being a barometer is a total red herring…I’ve watched droves of parents arrive at 9, drop their kids off until 12 then sweep back in to pick them up….it’s cheap day care and very little else on a Sunday, everyone knows that.

Look at ages 10 to 19 and see how many combined teams there are from clusters of clubs as they can’t raise enough players individually to form a team.

I’ve got no experience of grass roots rugby in Wales, I’ve not been involved since moving back…..my experience is purely in England, in the east and West Midlands . Welsh rugby has its own issues but the problems are all across mens rugby with the exception of the pacific isles and South Africa.

Wales, apart from a 10 year period when we lost a generation to league and 4 years where England ruled the world, have always been quite capable of taking your scalp.

I’m not sure what technically poorer means leave alone being regarded as that….against whom, England?

    That’s a nonsense phrase.

When I used to watch the 6 nations 10 years ago, Wales were exciting and England pure brute force. Ireland were also exciting to watch. It's just become dreary now all round and I no longer bother to watch it. I watched England's semi as we'd got that far, it was boring, England had zero hope of scoring a try so they didn't even bother to attempt it. I got the impression SA would have liked to play Rugby but when England's game became obvious, they out-played them at the rule game instead. All in all it wasn't Rugby at all, it was a game of who could force the opposition to concede the most penalties by trickery.

I will watch this evening and hope for an actual game.

Did you start this thread to impress us all with your own particular take on rugby and rebuke everyone else’s thoughts? Because that’s what you have done. I’m happy to bow to your superior knowledge as my primary sport is football as I was better at that. But I did play for four seasons in my twenties and have been watching it for 50 years including six seasons of watching my youngest go from under 11’s through colts and onto the fringe of the first team until he went to university, so I do have some thoughts on the game. I’m only sorry they contradict your superior knowledge.

I’ll refrain from calling it nonsense!

Yes….my sole aim was to show off, to put everyone in their place and bend to the majesty of my superior knowledge…..and I would have got away with it too if t hadn’t been for those pesky kids….it’s why I do it every World Cup.

I’m not the one repeatedly stating England are the NH’s best tactical or technical team….why’s it unreasonable to discuss that in return?

A team who chose to simply not attack I.e. score tries are not technically superior to teams that can and do score tries.

Whether they are more successful is open to debate….but out of the 4 semi finalists only England chose to not even attempt tries….kicking ball low in phases, kicking ball away on turnovers etc. it’s ugly rugby.

You should demand far far more as an England fan.

Oh dear, hard to see a way back after that decision.

Only hope is SA switch off….can’t see it myself.

Back to SA not having a backup hooker who can throw, be interesting to see how that pans out.

That’s not the issue. The problem is you stamp on everyone else’s.

How would Wales have dealt with the springboks, played their running game and got crushed, changed tactics and did what England did ( very well imo ) or come up with some new tactic yet unheard of. I personally doubt the rigidity of playing one way it is flawed, England can and did score tries in this tournament you seem to have conveniently forgotten that. We have never really been a running team playing out from the back we have always had big players who are happy in the scrum and a strong defence. Organisation and tactics are England's strong points not a continuation of some long lost romantic vision of a great running team with fly halves ghosting past clueless wing backs..
