best place for house radiators?

  1. I had my entire house heated from scratch, albeit 8 years ago for 1.5k. Last year the same guy replaced the boiler for a new Worcester Bosch, 1.5k. For exactly the same installation British Gas wanted 4.8k. Same boiler, same location, same warranty.

The boiler itself cost our fitter the princely sum of £800!!(with his trade discounts)

Shop around and find a one man band for the best deal but make sure it's someone who's recommended and you can trust.

Rads under windows BTW as everyone else has said. Also better if you have overhanging window sills inside to have the rads stepped on the brackets which hold them as far off the wall as possible. Before fitting glue some reflective polystyrene boards to the walls behind the rads
    :)

  3. true, and i may venture into this in a few years time but i suspect the chimneys will need work and the original 'saltaire pots' installed and they're made to order and aren't cheap. of course:rolleyes:

  4. what joker says , bettys dad had a worcester bosch last year fitted for 1200. You need to find a plumber you know from old even if you have to put him up n feed , some are bandwagon , shes minted ikes

  5. We can just dream of central heating ...:D

I`m with TWC, it has great satisfaction walking down the woods and bringing back a big log ,before I had a toilet I was leaving one...

  8. already got a chap. it's not the cheapest quote but is recommended... by an actor . cheapest quote is from a mate in nottingham who is fully qualified but may not turn up when supposed to and hasn't even come out to quote. for the sake of a few hundred quid i think i'll have to stick with the local guy who can come out if there's a problem.
    i may regret this :/

  9. If you go for the Worcester Bosch I think they give 5 years parts n labour guarantee. I've been looking into it for a wile and they seem to be the most recommended.

  10. I only fit worcester , they do what it says on the tin . there are cheaper boilers but buy one of those and you willbe buying parts sooner , the cheapest boilers have some very expensive parts , thats how they make there money , worcester boilers are made in this country albeit for a german company , the factory visit i had was very impressive and service when you need it is 1st class

  11. I'd also say under the windows, simply because you don't tend to put furniture there so it's a good use of dead space.

  12. Great! When can you start?

  13. You can save yourself a bus load of cash by fitting all of the rads and pipe work, and let the plumber do the final install (fit boiler and pressure test the system!!)

I did this for a mate of mine... saved him about a grand on the install price!!

As for a good place for radiators, plumbase aren't too bad ;)

  14. I buy my rads from Plumbase or screwfix

  15. When I did my mates house, plumbase was cheaper than screwfix (think they had a sale on)

    Double panel, double convector

  16. I'm trying to avoid any unnecessary disasters so fitting them myself is out of the question. Need current rads taking out and new smaller ones going under the windows. I'm much better at the destroying and soft furnishing sides :D

  17. I'd recommend an Ideal Logic+ boiler. 7 years parts and labour warranty.

Rads usually best under the windows. This area is usually the coolest part of a room, even with double glazing. this cooler air allows convection from the radiator that then, by thermals, draws warm air up from the radiator and circulate it throughout the room.

Radiators permit heat two ways. 1st Convection or convected heat, the 2nd being Radiant heat.

But depends on the length and thickness on curtains!

  18. curtains will be long, thick and very well lined.. and tucked behind rads when closed. (i'm making the curtains)
