Best insect repellant while camping

  1. Having just gone through a horrible time with leg cellulitis, I am now thinking of the summer. I need to avoid cuts and grazes the best I can and also insect bites. Any ideas for good insect bite repellents for use while camping? Interested in natural products and also plug in types.

  2. eat plenty of vitamin B6 daily....great if you love Marmite.....Lemon zest/Citronella to disguise your natural scent....'Skin so Soft' by Avon works pretty well

I tend to get bitten to buggery, while others sharing the same space may get one or two....
Essentially, you're best to keep yourself covered if you can....citronella wrist/ankle bands....also plenty of summer travel clothes are now anti mosi...worth googling

....or just stand next to me;)

  3. Take up smoking. The nicotine coursing around your veins will be the perfect antidote to mosquito bites.

  4. Cheers vanorak, will start to build up my arsenal against the little biters!

  5. Plug in types? oh dear !

  6. You know that deep heat stuff you rub on pulled muscles? like a minty smell?
that is good,or drink lots of rum! smell like a sailor and they wont bite.
As vanorak said that vitamin b6 deficiency is actually true!

  7. 100% DEET works, not the watered down stuff.

  8. Hair spray........................................................................turns them into gliders.

My good lady is the best insect repellant, she seems to attract the nasty bitey little boogers & so they leave me alone

  11. if you bite one back they tell their mates and they then wont bite you , but if not , i eat marmite or spray legs with moz jungle spray before the beggars come hunting and if your going out or ta bed . weve found giving the awning and bus a squirt tends to keep them away too.

  12. We use mosi-guard natural ,the midgies don't like it .

@scote & @Barneyrubble are both bang on. Get the highest concentration of DEET you can. In my experience, nothing works like DEET & we've tried a lot natural remedies. We're all different though, & it depends on how you react.
If you really don't want DEET, there is a product called Autan which is pretty good & has stuff called icaridin in it which is supposed to be healthier than DEET!!! Also known as "Bayrepel" as the active ingredient. It's not bad for me but I will always get the highest DEET product I can.
Good luck, reacting to bad bites is a miserable experience.:(

  14. yeh autan thats good , i use that in spain alot :)

  15. only trouble with using it is, every time you go to get in your bus it moves away from you in a comedic style:D

I've heard its also effective at keeping away @Baysearcher & @sANDYbAY ....and any one else with a user name with 'bay' in it ;) :D

    ....ok it wasnt that funny:oops:

  17. Yeah and if you use a light with that, they become. Fireflies :)

  18. My son is the best insect repellant there is. there is something about him that mossies love so they leave the rest of us alone. I would rent him out but he's 20 now so probably not going to comply.
