Just read the Michael Caine biography and it was always the intention to make a sequel in which he got to the front of the bus ran the engine to burn of the fuel, they would all then creep to the front of the bus jump and the loot would go crashing down the rocks to the mafia below ...the sequel was then about them stealing it back again ...but it never happened, can't remember why ...studio was bought out or something?!?
I just read the post. Spent years wondering why they ended the film like that. For years I thought surely a sequel was planned? Now I know it was. Maybe they could do the sequel next year, 43 years after the first. It could start with Michael Caine lying on the floor of the bus saying something like 'the fuel tank in this bus is bloody massive'. Then, all of a sudden, after 43 years, it at last runs dry and they start creeping to the front of the bus. Don't laugh. I think it could work.

I just read the post. Spent years wondering why they ended the film like that. For years I thought surely a sequel was planned? Now I know it was. Maybe they could do the sequel next year, 43 years after the first. It could start with Michael Caine lying on the floor of the bus saying something like 'the fuel tank in this bus is bloody massive'. Then, all of a sudden, after 43 years, it at last runs dry and they start creeping to the front of the bus. Don't laugh. I think it could work.

With a film is as good as The Italian Job its good it didn't get marred by a poor sequel yet I can't help but think the sequel would have been equally as good.

It has been bugging me what the music is on the latest Thompson's holiday adverts on TV, and then it struck me - it's "Where is my mind" by The Pixies, which is also the play-out music from Fight Club.
