im looking into this as well ...not the drill loool ,but a bench system to start my engine ...paul where are you ?????
Thought so I have a good mind to try and make it work to prove my sanity. I have started a landy with a starter handle What about a starter handle with the imput shaft welded on the end and a mate stood on the engine or is that more proof of insanity? Just thinking out loud.
bench run a engine ,step by step guide ......the paul way ....your the new vw guru by the way ,coz i said
ok!! Well first step is a post 76 bell housing and starter, or a T25 bell housing and post 76 starter... this means you can start early 200mm clutch engines, plus 215s and 228s on the 2l type 4!! you'll need to knock up a frame to mount the bell housing to... I'll get some pics of mine as a reference!! You'll also need a fuel pump, unless you have a mech one on your engine!! Next is the electrics... keep it simple... bulb for the oil light switch, live feed for the coil, and also some wiring for the alt/genny... That's all you need... I have a electric foot pedal so I can crank the starter and work the throttle at the same time... That is pretty much it!!
nice one paul ,ill await pic ...your a diamond and half in this rough world ,we call the latebay now renamed midlife crisis drop in center
There are videos on YouTube of people starting VWs with rope-pulls, a bit like an outboard motor. Properly setup, an 800 watt power drill should do the job. http://youtu.be/PI46qVW2WA4
I had a word with RJES (the subaru conversion blokes) and got a bellhousing for £15 off them for my bench engine starter. They just sel them as scrap as they change them for their own bellhousings to fit to the subaru engine. I just sat my engine on the floor (upright type 1 engines will sil on the bottom of their heatexchangers) and connected the bellhousing to it.
