  1. sorry guys ,
have only just got back online.... v late now.....mothersday and all that............i'll have to check on the starter motor situation :(....hey ho...

  2. Hey Joker,
you know you're stuff....the pictures of the bell housing that Kank has posted...does it look like its right? as i've only seen this 1600 one ???

  3. I have a recon 76 on bell housing I don't need. It's had a new arm/bushes etc. It's powder coated black outside & painted white inside.

I will be going to the Volksworld show if that helps.

I can get pics today. £50 buys it.

You will need to find the correct starter motor. A T25 one will hit the solenoid on the chassis, so avoid that unless you want to cut the bodywork. The cheaper repro 2.0l bay starters from GSF don't fit. They have the casting holes 5mm too far apart.
A recon Bosch one will be ok, but they are about £110 I think.

The other thing to remember is the input shaft from the gearbox is longer for a type4 motor, so you should change that too.

    Good luck!

  4. thanks for the info Pete,
yes , pics would be great. Is it from a CP code gearbox?
why has it been painted inside? ... please excuse my limited knowledge :)
    cheers

  5. sorry Pete
forgot to ask what would postage be to south wales Np44 1pq.thanks

  6. ........it just gets better and better.......input shaft will also probably be needed now..anyone? :'(

  7. I am not sure why he paints it white, I think he just likes it like that.

Postage would be a tenner or so, if not, I might be down near Blackwood soon anyway.

I know a man who would have a shaft, but would have to make a call.

I've been following your strife and I'm glad your getting sorted and glad you have sense of humour. You brought a VW so you must have a sense of humour. :D

  12. Cheers mate,
yes went through it early on in the resto and wondered what the heck I was doing...the magic mid life crisis....now starting to realise that sh** happens, usually to me!!!
Just seems that as we are finishing sorting out one prob the next rears its head.......we were so close to bringing Bertie to life and then had it snatched away......i've never heard him breath......so close. so close :)

I though I was sorted mechanically, most of the body was done and I was happily leaving a trail of oil all over France last summer. I decided to stop my oil leak and sort my gear selection problems last weekend. Now my engine is in bits on the garage floor and my gearbox is just about back together also on the garage floor. So much for "we'll just get the door cards sorted and it'll be finished"

Oh yeah my wipers have stopped working and I can't demist the windscreen.

    Nearly finished ;D

Looks like sh** happens to VW van owners generally. ???

  14. " I resemble that remark!!" ::)

Might be able to get it down to you on Sunday.

I can get a shaft posted out for £10 plus postage from my gearbox guy. I have emailed you his details.

I have told him about this forum, so may be along at any time. He is the Guru on camper gearboxes & a very good engineer.

  16. Cheers Pete ,
looks fab, and good news on shaft i will email/contact him later and get that sorted.

  17. just been chating to volksheaven and showed the pics they dont think its the right bell housing, dont know what to do now. rang your man justin but couldnt get no answer?
    arghhh :-

  18. Hey Pete,
any chance you can take measurements across the bell housing and the depth etc.
spoken to Volksheaven and show the pic bell housing and they seem to think that its not what i need, the tell tale sign is that there are those finned splines on the lumpy noodules in th bottom of the 2lltr housing...and on yours its got smooth ones  night mare
    cheers
