Or, if you haven't read it, "Not Much of an Engineer" by Stanley Hooker. Covers the early days of the Merlin ("You seem like a bright fellow who knows about all this airflow stuff. From tomorrow, you're in charge of the supercharger, ok?") and Rolls gas turbines. Plenty of bright fellows and politics (Stan was a bit naive about the Chinese...). Great book!
