Basingstoke newbie saying Hello! and asking stupid questions

Discussion in 'Introduce Yourselves' started by Wispy, Aug 29, 2012.

  1. Hi guys :)

I thought it was about time I said hello. I signed up here after being lucky enough to meet a few of you at a show at Sandown a few months ago. I have no idea who I was talking to, but he had a blue bus with various Star Wars bits of decoration in, and he took the time to start my education in the ways of the late bay - even though we should have been kicked out of the grounds by then! So a big thank you, whoever you are.

Having hired a '79 pop top a couple of weeks ago for a motorsport festival, my family have all fallen in love with the bay, and have decided we need our own one in our lives. So I have a couple of questions:
    1. What sort of prices would I be looking at for a full respray, including primer? Would it be more for a metallic finish?
    2. Are there any local meets that take place anywhere near Basingstoke? Or is it just the big festivals?

    Cheers guys :)

  5. Hi, welcome to the club, I can't help you out with local club meets as I'm way up north in Scotland.

As for the respray cost though it would depend on how much other work was involved, you can keep prices down by doing loads of the prep work yourself usually, things like removing lights/windows etc, even rubbing the old paint work down if your up to it. For a full respray though depending on how much work is needed and how good a place you go to could cost anything from about £1000 to £5000 for a top end job, you should be looking nearer the £2000 mark though and metallic paints are normally slightly more as the cost a little more to buy and are a bit harder to spray depending on the chosen colour.

    Hope this helps.

  7. welcome <--also in concrete town lol :)

  8. Thanks for the warm welcome, and the cost guide - that's very helpful. Just trying to work out what sort of budget to plan for, and how much work to take on. I realise that I am going to have to get my hands dirty sooner rather than later with this!

As for meets, the reason I ask is that a car forum I'm on has local (vaugely county-based) regions, many of which meet up every month (or more often). Events like Busfest sound great, but it's a long way to go for the day, when we haven't got anything to camp in yet! I'd love to see a other peoples vans to get some more knowledge and inspiration :)

  9. Hi and welcome - only prerequisites for bay owning, a big heart and Deeeeeep pockets! :)

  10. Hi and welcome.

Don't worry other van owners will find you.

  11. Hello and welcome.

I'm not too far from Basingstoke (nr Alton). Can't help with respray costs I'm afraid. But it you are looking at bays in the area and wanted another set of eye's give me a shout to see if i'm free.

If you want a nosey round my van you are welcome - not sure it will give you much inspiration - it's basic but solid.

  12. welcome aboard

    Hello mate,
A re-spray as has been said can cost anything between about £1k and £10k. It all depends on the condition of the bodywork and how much shaping is required. Welding is normally priced on top. If new seals are needed all around, budget another £1k.
Do you especially want one to do up yourself or is a completed bus an option?
