Mine has the badge like 75swampys picture, with holes in the tailgate for fitting it was built in Oct 73 but who knows if the tailgate is original.... Just got out looked at chip in paint and it shows same blue - dark blue - jaffa - pastel white paint strata as the main bus. The M plate decodes as pastel white so its original...
my 78 has nothing. tbh i would not normally consider adding a badge to any vehicle (i usually de-badge my cars..) but i have considered adding a script to the rear for this - its got lots of shiny stuff already so i think it would look good. i'd go for the later script though, not the early/splitty type - ie same font as @rickyrooo1 would have with a VW-Automatic badge, but just with the "volkswagen" like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1967-1977-V...Parts_Accessories&hash=item233bcec335&vxp=mtr ... although it'd not want to drill the tailgate. i'm sure you could grind off the pegs and fit it with some self-adhesive pads.
Not sure where the script badge came from, but the VOLKSWAGEN badge with a line underneath was deleted in 1973 looking at the brochures. I'm tempted to say the script one is unofficial and looks it.
this is the correct font and badge for 78, it was glued/taped on, i took it off to clean the faded paint then re fitted.
Wasn't the same script also used on Type 3 and Type 4 automatics of the seventies as well? I do like an authentic badge
don't know mate, just know this was original, you can actually see where i rubbed too hard cleaning the old glue/tape off and went through to the original paint (champagnes start white and are sprayed over brown)
So, I did it: Volkswagen script badge by lotus-gt, on Flickr NOS badge, pegs ground off, sticky pads cut super-small so the can't be seen. Very pleased with how it looks.
If VW had fitted a badge to the tailgate, if it were to match the w/c VWs of the time (Passat, Golf, etc), it would probably be one of these, I suppose:
