Awful news ,well to me anyway

  1. I was made redundant many years ago, I am well retired now, and it was life changing and definitely for the better. When redundancy happens, I think it wakes people up to the reality that being employed is you working for a person or organisation for money. Nothing else, just money. People may want job satisfaction and take pride in their job, but the employers dont see it that way. They want a job done and they pay you for it. Its an employment contract with terms and conditions. That is all it is.

I turned up for work one Monday morning and was given a letter and 10 minutes to empty my desk and leave the premises. I was not alone, many staff lost their job that day. It was brutal and impersonal. No thank you for loyal service and a job well done. Just a letter and the statutory pay. I maintained my dignity and negotiated a bigger settlement and costs of retraining. I kept on good terms with them even though I thought they were bast**ds.

When the job ceases or changes, then they make people redundant and take on new people with the new skills they are looking for. Simple as that. Organisations go bust or merge or get taken over. It happens all the time. Restructuring takes place and redundancies happen.

The latest steel industry job losses are an example. Chinese steel is cheaper, nobody wants British made steel, so the company cuts its costs and sheds workers. The company needs to make a profit, constant losses will make it go bust and everyone loses their job.

Standard Chartered Bank is in the news about its financial losses and its mention of widespread job losses. Its happening everywhere.

Being chained to one organisation for a long time is risky, only having one skill is also risky. The modern world is changing fast and keeping skills up to date is vital.

More and more people are self employed or start their own businesses. This is a much better option as you are in control and make your own decisions. You learn. You grow up. You stretch yourself and find you can do lots of new things. Your life is much better. You are no longer a servant.
