Automatic gearbox

  1. I have a type 4 2.0l engine with auto gearbox, on the gearbox there is a vacuum, which somone has just blocked off! i would like to connect it back up but not sure were it goes??

what year is the van? the vacumn box was originally only on a 1700 1973 to about 75 vehicle, chances are it's a mishmash of bits 2 litre ones would not be vacumn

  3. Sounds like early be same as mine, gearbox vacuum connects up to the carb manifold, same as the other side where you brake vacuum goes. Sure this is right, been a while since I looked but sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong :)

  4. I've fitted a 2 litre to my 1700 box too.

yes don't get me wrong, the engine will fit no problem - i was trying to work out if the auto box had been retro fitted to a newer van - hopefully you've answered the question, mine is a 2 litre but being 1978 is not vacumn.

  6. Lucky you are as it'll be a complete arse ache to find parts for ours mate! Camper 123, make sure you look after it and check your levels! :)

wilma72 has a good contact in america for auto parts, theirs is a vacumn box too.

  8. Hi, Its a 1972, the original engine was a 1700cc but the PO fitted a 2.0L. Were about on the manifold does it connect up to? as the pipe on the vacuum is only small and the pipes on both manifolds are big?

  9. At the moment i can't check the level:( as the PO has fitted the wrong rear tinware (must be for a manual gearbox), as the tinware has no hole for the ATF dipstick!! looking from underneath the vehicle the dipstick tube has a thread on the end and stops about 2 inches from the back on the tinware, so i'm guessing that another bit of tube srews on to this? to bring it into the engine bay?

  10. I bet there is a reason for it being blocked off...

Sometimes the diaphragm in the vac unit perishes, and it allows oil to be siphoned out of the box and into the intake of the engine... big cloud of white smoke anyone??

So give it a good check when you reconnect it before running up the engine!!

And it does connect to the manifold below the carb

  11. That doesn't sound right to me... some sort of PO/garage modification by the sounds of it!! :(

  12.
  13. Also my brake servo hose is just hanging by the gearbox, does this just go straight to the inlet manifold? so the gearbox vacuum connects on the drivers side manifold and the brake servo hose on the passenger one??

  14. What carbs do you have?

The vac for the gearbox is around 6-8mm.. I can't remember if there is a adaptor for the other end o_O

The servo does also connect to the inlet manifold... you'll have better brakes too with it connected ;)

  15. Yeah that's it fella, the dipstick tube is in two parts, the front bit that sticks into the engine bay screws into the bit that you've got left. It's difficult me to picture it all due to not having access to my bus at home but the servo pipe connects onto a pipe that goes across the back of the engine with two small pipes that the brake servo and gearbox vacuum attach to, then the other end of the pipe fits to the other manifold.

Hopefully you can see the picture and it makes a little more sense :)
Otherwise I'll pm you my number buddy.

  16. I'm sure I've got another pipe fella if yours is missing but ill have to check.

  17. Thanks lardy, thats just what i needed:thumbsup: I will have a good look through all the parts i got to see if i have that pipe.

  18. Ok fella, you to my number now if you need anymore help ;)

  19. Also i may need to know the length of the top section of the atf dipstick tube if i don't have it (pretty sure i don't) but will check through the spares, as i would probably have to get one made?

  20. Ok, don't make me do anymore drawings though, lol! Shocking!haha
