Automatic gear box oil.

  1. Does anyone know which oil I need for an auto box. Heard mixed reviews on changing it but going to give it a try before putting the box in for rebuild ect.

    Thanks Scott

  3. Cheers did you change or clean the filter at the same time as the oil? Do you know the volume the box needs as there's nothing in the Haynes on auto boxes?

i didn't change the filter no, partially because the gasket for the box is out of stock everywhere (mines 010 - yours may be 003?) and also the only reason i changed the oil is 'cos i had to drain it to remove the filler pipe to remove the engine, bentley says 2.5 litres i think? needs to be dipped with engine running in N.

  5. Ahh. Just so we aren't confusing things, are you discussing the final drive or the auto transmission section - though assume it's the latter? These have different oils in them. The final section takes a litre of regular gear oil, the auto transmission takes 3 litres of ATF. I've just ordered sump gaskets for these. JK does the auto, and VWH does the other one.

  6. I bought a roll of cork and made new gaskets for a customers van... was either that, or I would've had to order them in from the states somewhere!! o_O

  7. I've got an auto which is slipping when in 3rd. People have said change the oil and filter although I have spoke to the people who I brought it off and they say this has already been done.
Trying to cover all bases before it's gearbox out and a rebuild.

  8. Yes if it's slipping it's likely to be the auto section. The filter is cleanable unless it's a 76-early77 model according to Bentley.

  9. Ok cheers, it's of a 73 but I've ordered a filter anyway so will change that.
I did read the filter clogged can cause trouble but not sure if it would cause the slipping.
I couldn't find the gasket though as they all say 76-79 do you know if it's the same for all or not?
Ordered the Bentley manual too as it seems to be referred too a lot.

  10. I'm guessing yours is an 003 box with vacuum shift so I don't know if it's the same.
