Auto vacuum? Oh and reversing switch?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Lardy, Aug 23, 2012.

  1. Whilst looking for a reversing switch, which doesn't appear to exist on my auto gearbox, I noticed a vacuum pipe on the bottom right of the gearbox. Does anyone know if this connects to the carb manifold like the brake vacuum pipe? If not, where does it go? Oh yeah and reversing lights, what should I do if I haven't got a switch on the gearbox? Was thinking of putting a switch on the dash?

  2. If I remember correctly, the switch for reverse on an automatic should be in the base of gear lever, in the cab.

your reverse switch is in the selector if you pop the cover off theres a green wire (ign live) anda black wire (feed to lights) the selector's probably worn, that's why mine don't work, eventually your inhibitor will wear as well and you'll have to bypass it.

the vacumn pipe is for an early gearbox they work off vacum instead of rod like the later one, if all your gears etc work maybe you've had a later box fitted?

  10. Hi, I had a look today and have found the wires under the auto selector box in the cab! I have the lights working however dont know which fuse the green wire goes to? Any ideas on where the vacuum pipe connects to on the engine?

The pipe from the vacuum modulator connects to the vac take off on the O/S carb, it tells it when to change gear.

  12. Oh PIE, after the remarks from Ricky, I was wondering when you'd come round lol. Cheers fella, appreciate it. You might be hearing from me again ;)
