I'm changing my 1973 bay ho manual has any 1 a list of all the parts I will need or work method any help b great full thanks
gearbox ,clutch pedal/cable[including outer]clutch, driveshafts, gearstick and rod also have to change v5..
We have the same engine/gearbox in our 73. It's a really rare one year only combination. Why are you changing it? I love the ease of driving the auto, get around 27mpg ( which isn't bad really) and have had the gearbox reconditioned at a modern gearbox garage. The parts are easy to source from America too. Let me know if you want contact details
Not 100 percent on it yet doin some research 1st as wire hates auto allso all trim is very hard to come by and mine is missing in cab what top speed do u get !! Thanks for the advise mind
We've never gone above 70mph to be honest. Sure we could, but the coolbox rattles too much when we hit speed If you want advice/info ask us or PIE on here-he's also got a 1973 auto and is good with mechanics. rickyrooo1 has got a later auto and is also really knowledgeable and loves his autobox. we HEART automatics
If you do go for the change, a six rib gearbox is the best to get. Don't know the code on these, one of the clever people will. The obvious/easy way is count the ribs on the box.
But I thought VW fitted an auto to the bus for the ladies?? And Toni Collette couldn't drive a stick shift and she's lovely.
stick with auo, thats your busses destiny..... it was meant to be that way... mine has been altered a billion times over but before i got it, i would love to know what it looked like originally! stick with auto, gears aren't always fun lol, i'vm still getting used to mine...
As said above, i've got the later auto (non vacumn) type, it's true i love auto's as my daily is auto as well, that said i didn't choose auto when i got my van and for ease of repair manual is best in my opinion, the accelerator works through the box on auto as well (at least it does on the later ones) so you'll need the correct cabling and conduits etc to link it to your carbs - unless of course yours is different (mine being fuel injected is accelerator cable to auto box then rods and levers to the fuel injection system) you'll also need a floor cut or at least some welding to fix the larger hole in the floor where the auto shift is i would think? a bit of rewiring to the starter to bypass the starter inhibitor as well, i must admit although i love auto's it's not to say that maybe if i keep the van that in the future i may think of the swap to manual so i could go with a different engine option as i doubt there is a conversion for scooby or golf diesel to auto box as freely as there is on the manual.
