AUTO issues... Please help

  1. Hi all!

Ive got a '78 2.0 auto and I've got to be honest, I'm not loving it like i should, to be honest it may be down to fluids needing changed, but the second I come to a hill it slows down straight away and can drop to 30mph some times which is bloody scary when lorries roar past you (along with everyone else) which is quite concerning. Also it seems to only be doing around 130 miles to a full tank, this may be a fuel issue not an auto issue but is worrying as to why, does anyone else have a similar issue? I hope it is fixable and for not too much, as apart from the very slow hill climbs and rubbish fuel, i do love driving it, and with the 2.0 I just feel there's more for it to give...

does anyone know if there is any modifications that can be made to the box that can help with the gears, Ive read about the slightly newer Audi that uses the same same auto box but has a different gear ratio, would this be an option?

thanks in advance for any advice.

    :)

  2. does it not kick down a gear when you put your foot down to compensate for the hill??

same question, but take it to 40/50mph on the flat, then put your foot flat to the floor... it should kick down a gear to help it accelerate!!

  3. Nope, i wish it did, no matter how much gas i give it makes difference, has to either slow right down to about 40 to kick down or its 40 or even 30 sometimes till the crest of the hill, what do u think the issue is?

the kickdown sounds like it's playing up, mine is intermittent too, i noticed the other day it sometimes does sommetimes doesn't.... but as i have other issues with it i'm living with it at the moment, try changing the atf and see how it goes, there is adjustment in the linkages to set it up (been reading bentley) but for now you can always drop it from D to 2 on a hill and report back (it will do 55 in 2nd easily and you can change from D to 2 whilst moving at speed)

  5. With ricky on this one!!

on the autos, the accel cable connects to the gearbox, then via a lever and a rod to the carbs... if the rod to the carbs is set wrong, then the kick down won't engage... also if it's too far the other way, you'll never get into top gear

and it's even more fun connected to f.i. .......
think yourself lucky it's a late auto box, the 1973-75 ones are rare and parts hard to get, they work off vacumn

Might be worth doing a compression test and if that is good tuning it up, might not be the box.

Im pretty sure the won't kick down above 35 to 40 ish anyway

dave i think the o/p says it won't kick down at all, like climbing a hill it just stays in 3rd and crawls slower and slower.......mine does the same now and again so i've got used to listening out and manually dropping it to 2nd.

well, as i said earlier try manually dropping it to 2nd just to see how it goes.....that said 130 miles to a tank? i thought mine was bad at 200...... so you may have a power issue as PIE says.

  13. The kick down sounds interesting, while im at getting a good service on it i might get the carbs tuned as i have twins on it they might be running rich, im based in sheffield, has any one used 'auto haus dolby' for anything? There are things i need to try that might solve it to be fair, and fingers crossed.
As mentioned in the first post im only getting about 130 mile to full tank, would be linked if, for example, the carbs are set wrong or wide open constantly running rich?

    What do you guys think?

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

I was thinking the same as Pie. A 2L shouldn't be slowing down like that anyway. I've never had to drop any of my buses down a gear on a motorway hill. Even the 1600 I have now.

  15. what transmission fluid brand would people recommend for when i replace it? or does it not really matter? O0 cheers guys! i love this site :)

Don't thinkhe brand of fluid matters as long as the spec is right. My kickdown works, but I always drop down to 2nd if I see my speed on a hill dropping......it takesforever to build the speed back on a hill !

I have a 2 ltr and get about 25ish on a run.....don't even look if its just pottering around.

  17. ok.. update time,

havent had chance to test the kick down but the ATF is clean as a whistle, bright cherry red and happily between the two little circles on the dip stick so its definitely not that.

next is to check the kick down, I'll update when I do.

    cheers peeps O0
