As some of you know i have an auto box on a 2 litre f.i engine, ever since i had it the part where it mates to the engine (torque converter) it's had a "chirruping" sound now and again - in fact i did a video of it on my you tube linky thingy....anyway i've driven the van loads this last week probably putting on 200 miles or so and i've started to notice it's starting to develop a slight clonk when i engage reverse...... all forward gears seem ok and it still kicks down and drives well but i imagine it's going to let go this year, does anyone have experience of these boxes or a honest repairer they know of as if it does let go i'm gonna be deep into credit card country and want to do it right 1st go. Ta. ???[hr]
Wouldn't worry to much Rick, mine has a bit of a clunk when putting it in reverse too. We can compare noises at TE.
ok i will do that, my neighbour is a mechanic and although not a vw man he knows enough, he said the same, for a few quid change fluid and see how it goes so i'll put it on the techenders list.
drive plates are cheap, just a big metal disc that bolts to the crankshaft like a flywheel but 1-2mm thick if they are failing they will creak until they break then the broken parts will have an amount of play which will get worse as the plate get spun back and forth could make a clonky creaky sound, easy fix though. have a look from underneath there is a fairly big hole you may be able to see whats going on
Ricky, try megabug in London for the plate. We got one off them last year. But do it quick before it really knackers and you can't drive the van.
ok thanks, really quicky will have to wait though i'm going camping thursday and next weekend too...... so i might get a lift on the big yellow taxi.
just looked on megabug site and can't see one, will have to call them, does anyone else know a stockist?
You can get them new from vw heritage for £180 http://www.vwheritage.com/vw_spares_Torque-conv-drive-plate-for-1-7-2-0-Type-4-1-9-2-1_act_shop.product_pID_124311_lang_EN_country_GB.htm?crumbPageToLoad=3
megabug have a 2nd hand one @ £75, is there a reason not to buy 2nd hand with these or would it be worn?
personally i would go new, no way of knowing how many miles the secondhand one has done, just like the one in your van really, if that makes sense
