  4. Under the gas regs, 26(9) whenever you do work you have to check the effectivness of the flue. In this case it sounds like yours has been relined, so visual inspection and with the fire out a flue flow with a smoke pellet. The fire needs sealing to the surround, only needs the mastik cutting away. The fires are normally sealed to the opening with a gasket of foam or silicon. Gas is always about covering yourself

so, why didn't he do it?

  6. No disrespect to anyone who works for BG but their fitters only know one small part of the job, IE fitting or breakdowns. So may be he wasn't allowed. The best way is get a local fitter who has been recomended by a friend to do a proper check and recomission the fire. Wouldn't be surprised if you get a call from BG to sell you a new fire!!

pranghams i'm sure you've hit the nail on the head, i expect they get a set amount of time for each service and he thought mmmm if i do all this i'm gonna be home late, i'm fairly confident the fire itself is safe and he was covering his arse.

  10. In the olden days they would train the fitters to do everything, but they would get the knowledge and experience and then start up on their own. So teach them just enough, also if they condemn an appliance and a new one is fitted they get commision

in fairness, the fire isn't condemmed, it's at risk due to not being fully inspected, i've had one condemmed years ago and they physically disconnected that from the supply, don't they do that now?

  12. Get yourself an audible carbon monoxide detector £40. The little visual tab ones are useless, your dead before you noticed its changed colour.

Anyone with a gas appliance, including boilers should have one as a matter of course.

You can't put a price on your life.

  14. There are three main catorgaries that we can use, NCS means it's not dangerous just things are done differentely now, then AR means it may become dangerous in the near future. The appliance gets turned off, and ID means it's dangerous to life and property as your looking at it, means you turn off and disconnect

  16. That'll be the NCS, not to current standards. That one's like the advisory on your mot, arse covering!!
