Anyone using a 50amp Alternator with external voltage regulator?

  1. Anyone using a 50amp Alternator with external voltage regulator out there and are they any good?
I've got one in a box of spares, and thinking of using it instead of my 38amp dynamo.
The engine is out at the moment so the swap will be easy, but I'm just wondering if its worth doing or not? Changing the wiring over is not an issue as I'm good with that sort of stuff.
I'm also going to be running a leisure battery too, so I'm thinking the extra amps would be useful...

  2. got the alt stand to go with it?

if you have, get it fitted... if you haven't, buy one and get it fitted!!

  3. Thanks. I was just wondering if the external regulator models were as good as the internal regulator models.....

  4. Dont forget to change the fuel pump and pushrod for one suitable for an alternator stand
Also if your running a standard carb you may need a different linkage on the side to clear the alternator or grind a section of the alternator casing to clear it

  5. I think the external ones are probably longer lasting, better built however the more expensive as a result? For the kind of Amps we are talking about on VW's they should all go the distance unless you start wiring in all sorts of junk that kills batteries.
