Not the itchy little buggers but sea dwelling ones.. I’m off to Wells next the sea in a couple of weeks , the dinner bill each night falls to whoever caught the least weight in crabs after an hour crabbing on the quay... So I’m appealing to the vast experience and knowledge hidden somewhere within the late bay contingent .. Best method and best bait , last year we bought a net and used manky old fish from a nearby shop and caught a good amount - but short of pinching a crab / lobster pot off a nearby trawler is there a tried and trusted way ???
We go crabbing with the kids at Mudeford , seem to be able to catch with any bait there , found mackerel or sardines the best , but bacon is just a good! You can get a net which lays flat on the ocean floor so when you pull it up they can’t fall off , better than the old bag method but not so good if the tide is coming in or out . Try a pair of smelly old pants , anything with a strong smell attracts them , some people use smoked bacon or kipper . We used to use up all our smelly old lug or fish guts when we were lads .
If you go round the big rock pools you will get the bigger eating crabs a d sometimes the odd lobster . Trouble with these pier jobies they are fished out by would be jack Hargreaves types
I’ve heard if you get the other ones , chuck a few rocks in the plug end of your bath fill with water then jump in and pull the plug out ,,,,,,all crabs will run for the rocks , jump out n off you go
you need some of those little bags for putting washing machine tablets into. Put your bacon in the sun for a few hours. Then in the bags. Bingo! the critters get their legs caught, and claws, in the netting of the bag and BOOM! loads in the bucket.
